Subject: Reds @ Cubs
Cincinnati's Clutchless Wonders did business as usual at the plate (5 for 32 with RISP with numerous $ chokes) but still came one massive and costly dose of sabotage defense away from sweeping the Cubs. Also as usual, the Cincy batters did not need their imagination to discern what a clutch hit looks like, they only had to watch their opponent time after time after time.... Game 1: The Reds scored 4 runs in the first 1/3 of an inning of the game, then nothing for the next 8 2/3 innings except 10 LOB and 1 for 8 with RISP, but that lead somehow held up for a 4-2 win. Starter Kent Mercker with his 2.49 ERA which increased today via 2 runs in 5 IP at long last got win #1 in a Cincy uniform. Reliever Jeff Shaw actually retired all 6 Cubbies that he faced, and in the CHN 8th the Cubs borrowed a page from the Cincy playbook -- loading the bases with 0 outs against Blown Save Brantley and then failing to score. Brantley also singlehandedly put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the 9th (walk, wild pitch) but managed to nail down the final out. =============================================================================== Game 2: The Reds out-LOBbed the Cubs by a factor of 3 (9-3), LOBbed 7 RISP with 2 outs (CHN: 0) helped by not one but two timely $ chokes while Chicago scored 100% of their runs with -- of course -- 2 outs in an inning, and yet the Reds prevailed with that most rare of outcomes: a 1-run win instead of the much more common loss by that same margin. Final score: 5-4. A 2-run single and a sac fly put the visitors up 3-0 in the 3rd but CIN starter Donne Wall gophered up a solo shot on a fortuitous 2-out split card to make the score 3-1 moments later. In the 5th, the exact same dice roll with the exact same batter at the plate and the exact same number of outs in the inning and a similarly fortuitous split card -- but this time with 2 men on base instead of 0 -- turned the 3-1 lead into a 4-3 deficit. Eric Davis' solo homer in the 7th put the Reds back into a tie and Reggie Sanders came up with a clutch (!) triple in the 9th to drive in Hal Morris from scoring position (!) with the winning run. Wall pitched well (7 IP, 7 baserunners) aside from the pair of 2-out dice rolls that cost him 4 runs, and he continues to get the job done at the plate, going 2 for 3 today with a run scored to raise his average to .400 on 8 hits in 20 at bats. Shaw got the W in relief with 2 scoreless innings and lowered his ERA to a still-ludicrous 4.97. =============================================================================== Game 3: The Reds scored twice before a batter was retired and then nothing for the next 9 innings except 10 LOB and 1 for 12 with RISP and today, unlike the very similar pattern in game one, that lead did not hold up very long at all. Tony Phillips opened the contest with a triple and when Morris followed with a home run it gave the Reds an immediate 2-0 lead and also represented the final break the team would get. CIN starter A.J. Sager was permitted to ease through the bottom of the first but HAL took his revenge in a big way one frame later. The fiasco began with nobody on base and -- what else? -- 2 outs. The critical play was a timely x-play hit to our worst fielder, with a sub-.100 hitting pitcher at bat. Naturally he blew it and the inning unraveled from there, capped by a Grand Slam (from the same player who had such a remarkably fortunate gopher-iffic day in game 2) plating the last 4 of SIX unearned runs in the inning. There was little action for the remainder of the day though the Reds did not lack for scoring chances. A comeback from an 8-2 score with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th was rather unlikely, but HAL fittingly ended the series by having the last Cincy batter roll yet another $ choke. Sager was hardly effective (4 IP, 9 baserunners) but allowed not a single earned run, while Brian Keyser's 4 inning mop-up relief stint was mundane aside from a -- you guessed it -- 2-out run-scoring rally in the 8th and some completely self-inflicted damage in the 7th (free pass, free pass, wild pitch, wild pitch) so 7 CHN runs were served up on a silver platter while the Reds lost by 6.
