Despite what seemed like the Rockies getting 5 and below on every split (especially running the bases), the padres managed to win 2 of 3. game 1: With 6-5 and 6-6 being auto hr's and 6-8 and 6-9 being on base rolls, the Padres naturally made 2 of the 3 outs in the first inning on rolls of 6-7. Luckily they did manage to find a 1-19 bp homer for a 2-0 lead. Edmonds had an auto hr in the 2nd and Young a sac fly in the 5th to tie it up. Erstad's 2 base error in the 6th led to 2 unearned runs but he made up for it with an auto hr in the 7th. Caminiti followed with another auto hr to tie the game. Santiago's throwing error on a stolen base led to another unearned run and the lead again for Colorado in the 7th. In the 8th, SD took advantage of a Colorado error to start the inning. Joyner followed with a double and both runners scored one out later when pinch hitter Flaherty singled "up the middle" on a rf(x) (the only one that Bichette blew all series). Surprised that Bichette had that much range, Flaherty was thrown out after rounding the base too far. In the 9th, SD pulled away as Caminiti had an rbi single and Santiago hit a 2 run homer to make the final score 9-5. It only took 55 games, but SD finally had a game where 1 team scored 9 runs. game 2: This one was ugly for SD from the start. Burks had a 2 run double in the first and Bichette a solo homer in the 2nd. Things fell apart for Sanders in the 3rd as Colorado hit 3 homers in a 4 batter stretch and scored 6 times. Sanders settled down and tossed 3 scoreless innings until finally tiring in the 7th. He departed after a walk and double to start the inning. Radinsky came on and game up hits to 3 of the 4 batters he faced. Hoffman was brought on to finally end the inning. Meanwhile the SD offense was limited to a pair of 2 run homers by Steve Finley as Colorado rolled to a 12-4 win. game 3: SD came from behind for a 1 run victory, no thanks to missing both a 1-17 single and home run chance in the game. Rockies got runs in the first and second before Caminiti homered in the 4th to make it 2-1. Castilla's 2 run homer in the 5th made it a 3 run lead. Joyner had a 2 run single and Cangelosi a 2 run triple in the 6th to put SD on top. Erstad had an rbi single in the 7th to put the Padres up 2. In the bottom of the inning, Castilla hit a 2 run homer and Burks followed with a solo homer to put the Rockies back on top. In the 9th, Caminiti hit his second homer of the game, a 2 run shot to put SD on top for good. HOffman got the first 2 outs of the 9th before a walk and double put 2 in scoring position but he got Edmonds to ground out to end the game and save the 8-7 win. Real life MVP (and juicer) Caminiti came into the series with just 8 homers but had a pair of 2 homer games to up his total to 12 on the year. He upped his rbi total from 29 to 36 as well. |
