Subject: BAA @ OAA Week 10

First, a personal note: If there’s anything more disturbing than a deadly “lone wolf” terror attack in your home town, it’s finding out that the killer went to my high school, graduated from the same college I did, and lived in a nice neighborhood near close friends of mine.  Those of you who are inclined to prayer, please keep Chattanooga in mind.

And now, back to the booth.

(Note: no new CM this week.)

Baltimore breaks out the bats in a decisive sweep at Oakland.

Game 1: BAA 9, OAA 4

A two-run single by Cal Ripken gave the O’s a 1st inning lead, but the score was 2-2 after one inning thanks to doubles by Oakland’s Tony Batista and Scott Brosius and an RBI single by Terry Steinbach. B.J. Surhoff, Rafael Palmeiro, and Mike Stanley each got RBI singles in the 2nd to build a 6-2 Baltimore lead.  The Orioles loaded the bases for a third straight inning in the 3rd but came up empty.  Mark McGwire singled in a run for the A’s in the 5th, but Baltimore retook a four-run in the 8th when Surhoff tripled and Palmeiro singled him home.  Craig Biggio singled in an insurance run in the 9th, giving the Orioles a 9-3 lead.  After reliever Matt Karchner loaded the bases in the bottom of the 9th, the O’s turned to closer Randy Myers, who walked in one run before shutting down the rally.  The teams combined for 25 runners left on base.

Game 2: BAA 7, OAA 3

Brosius put Oakland up 2-0 with a 1st inning homer off Curt Schilling, but Rob Deer did the same to Dwight Gooden in the 2nd to tie the game.  Baltimore took a 4-2 lead on a Palmeiro double in the 3rd, and Biggio doubled in another run in the 5th.  In the top of the 9th, the Orioles made it 7-2 thanks to a sac fly by Biggio and an RBI single by Stanley.  After the shaky 1st, Schilling allowed just two harmless singles over the next six innings, and all the A’s could muster off the Orioles bullpen was Steinbach’s solo HR in the 9th.

Game 3: BAA 14, OAA 2

Every Oriole in the lineup had at least one hit and scored at least once, which is generally a good sign.  Palmeiro started the scoring in the 1st with two out by taking Mark Gubicza deep for a 2-0 Baltimore lead, and Brady Anderson added a two-run shot in the 5th (on a split card of 1 where 2-20 would yield the third out.)  In the sixth, Greg Zaun decided it was his turn to hit a two-out, two run homer – his first of the season.  Batting after Zaun, Deer broke the pattern with a solo shot to make it 7-0.  Mark McGwire put Oakland on the board in the 6th with a solo HR.  In the top of the 7th, seldom-used Brent Bowers doubled in two runs and scored on a Keith Lockhart single.  Any hopes of a miracle A’s comeback went over the fence in the 8th when Ripken smashed a two-out grand slam.   Mop-up man Jimmy Haynes (ERA over 8.00) gave up two hits, a walk, and two wild pitches in 1 1/3 innings, but the only A’s run against him scored on a passed ball.
