Subject: Reds @ Mets

The schizophrenic Reds contradict their typical form by getting an occasional clutch hit (14 for 40!), avoiding any bullpen chokes, and failing to lose any 1-run games (because we didn't play any) and score 26 runs in the first half of this week's home-and-home series with the Mets.  "Typical form" will certainly return after this brief time out....

Game 1: Two costly errors (Lead Glove Larkin does it again) and a wild pitch gave the Mets a totally unearned 2-0 lead in the 3rd against Kevin Jarvis and 4 straight singles one frame later made it 4-0 while the Cincy offense remained inert against Bobby Jones.

The Reds came to life with 5 straight hits to open the 5th inning, aided by a rare blown-x play by our opponent that we actually capitalized on.  Another hit and a groundout put the visitors on top by the score of 5-4 later in the inning and single runs in the 6th, 7th & 8th provided the insurance for an 8-4 victory.

Despite allowing 12 hits Jarvis was able to last long enough to earn the win, and the Reds did not allow a free pass all day until 2 were out in the bottom of the 9th, at which point Jeff Brantley simply couldn't resist loading the bases via 2 freebies and bringing the tying run to the plate in the form of the one batter most likely to forge that tie, Mike Piazza.  But good old Blown Save Brantley was just teasing today, and he got Piazza to ground out to end the contest.

==================================================================================

Game 2: Donne Wall and Kevin Ritz both started off pitching well enough, but Ritz fell apart in the middle innings and permitted 8 runs to put the Reds up 9-1, so naturally Wall returned the favor in the late innings and gave up 5 to the Mets which fortunately was insufficient to blow the game.

Three of the Wall's late 5 scored in the NYN 8th which began with some timely sabotage defense when one of our not-a-4 outfielders choked up a 4-base blown-x howler, and the other pair crossed the plate after Wall left the game and Brian Keyser replaced him on the mound.  But you have to expect those kind of things from the Reds, and this time no real harm was done.  Final score: 9-6.

New York outhit Cincinnati 13-10 and whacked 6 doubles and a gopher among their 13, led by slugger Mark McLemore.  However the Reds had nearly as many total bases as the Mets thanks to 3 home runs, and had a 7-1 advantage in walks.

==================================================================================

Game 3: As in the opener, the home squad took an early lead and also as in the opener, little of it was deserved.  Some more timely OF sabotage gave the Mets a pair of "earned" runs and they took a quick 3-0 lead against A.J. Sager.  The Reds bunched 3 hits and a walk for 3 runs in the 4th to tie the score and went ahead in the 6th when .150-hitting Bret Boone actually came through with an RBI hit.

The Reds clearly did not lack for opportunities, batting a whopping *20* times with runners in scoring position while the Mets had only 3 such chances today.  Of course we didn't get many hits, but did manage a few and those few led to a 9-3 win.

The Mets had 4 hits after 3 innings; Sager finished with a complete game 5-hitter and raised his record to 4-6 as his ERA increased slightly to 2.94.

Sager entered the bottom of the 9th still going strong and fanned the first 2 Mets to give him 9 punchouts for the day.  After a 2-out single, Bernard Gilkey hit an easy x-grounder to Larkin, who did what he nearly always does and tried to field it with both hands clasped firmly around his throat.

Apparently that inconsequential gaffe was done on purpose, as Sager recorded the final out not on some mundane grounder but instead by whiffing Edgardo Alfonzo to give Sager 10 K's in a game for the second time in his career.  The other time was his first major league start for the Padres 2 seasons ago.
