Subject: Reds @ Dodgers

The unluckiest team in the universe pulls off not one, not two, but three late-inning chokes as we waste three decent efforts by starting pitchers.  The split cards were their usual despicable selves against the Reds, with Cincy batters getting the adverse result *88* percent of the time.  Perhaps that had just a tiny impact on the fact that we only managed 16 hits in 31 innings....

Game 1: Donne Wall tossed 7 shutout innings at the Dodgers, Jeff Shaw added 2 more and didn't choke (he'd save that for game 2) so naturally the Reds couldn't muster even a single run -- or barely even a hit.

Hideo Nomo was the star of the show, tossing an 11-inning complete game and limiting the Reds to just 2 hits.  That infinitesimal hit total notwithstanding, the Reds still found a way to out-LOB the Dodgers by 60% and bat 10 times with runners in scoring position while getting our customary zero hits in that situation.

The Reds got a runner to second base with 1 out in the 8th, 10th and 11th frames and could hardly move him to third, much less all the way home.

Shaw left in the 10th for an ineffective pinch hitter and Jeff Brantley survived one inning before choking the game away with 2 outs in the bottom of the 11th.  The Reds had missed 3 split card home run chances (0 for 5 on all split cards today) from the 8th inning on.  The Dodgers got a similarly microscopic chance in the 11th, and what kind of card do you think they drew?

Game over, Reds choke again.  Final score: 2-0 in 11.

Game 2: The only contest decided in regulation, but the Reds still came up with the losing run in our opponent's final at bats of the day.  The series was 17 innings old before Cincy got on the scoreboard, not only doing so in the 6th inning today but actually taking a 2-1 lead in the process.  Four straight singles produced the pair of markers with still just 1 out, but the next two batters both LOBbed a runner at third.

Luckless Dave Burba permitted just one single in the bottom of the 6th (and 2 walks, and a wild pitch) but that was sufficient to forfeit our momentary surplus.  Burba and his opposite number, Izzy Valdes, turned the game over to their respective bullpens after 6 innings of work.  Advantage: not the Reds.

A 2-on, 0-out rally in the CIN 7th was promptly extinguished by a timely GIDP, and it was only a matter of time before the choke was on.  It occurred an inning earlier than expected, via a solo gopher in the L.A. 8th instead of the 9th.

Not quite undaunted, the Reds went down in order with 2 strikeouts in the 9th and made Roberto Hernandez throw only 9 pitches, 3 to each hapless batter.  Final score: 3-2, with the Reds extending their N.L. lead in the unenviable one-run loss category by racking up #14.

Game 3: A carbon copy of the opener, aside from a few more runs crossing the plate today.

As in the opener the score was tied after 9 innings, the same Cincy arsonist choked up a gopher in the same inning, to the same batter, with the same number of runners on base (1, otherwise they would have been one-run losses 15 and 16).  Final score: 5-3 in 11 innings.

L.A.'s Todd Hundley picked the perfect time to snap out of his season-long slump; it was his gophers which decided all three contests, with the Cincy Arson Squad only too happy to oblige the .210 hitting catcher.
