Subject: Reds @ Padres

In a battle between two of the N.L.'s more underachieving teams, the Reds took the first pair before losing the finale not by our customary 1-run margin, but instead by double digits....

Game 1: The Reds had eked out a couple of runs and given ex-Padre A.J. Sager a slim lead against his old mates, and then we finally got to see what a clutch hit looks like.  Unfortunately, that hit was a 3-run homer by ex-Red Benito Santiago, which came with 2 outs (of course) in the SDN 5th and put the home team on top.

Bret Boone doubled in a run to tie the score in the 6th and Hal Morris learned from Santiago's hit and came up with the rarely-seen 2-out hit for the Reds which restored our 2-run lead.  Those runs came just in time to allow Sager to keep the W and Cincy the bullpen was hittable as always, but five late runs by the Reds helped make the Arson Squad's task of blowing the game a little more difficult.  Final score: 10-4.

The Reds banged out 16 hits off Bob Tewksbury and 2 relievers, those 16 including 4 doubles and 4 home runs.

=========================================================================

Game 2: Stop the presses!  The Reds won a 1-run game, though naturally we had to blow a pair of 2-run leads to make it that close.  CIN starter Donne Wall raised his record to 6-1 by tossing 6 shutout innings before Brian Keyser coughed up a triple to the first San Diego batter he faced and was immediately terminated.

Jeff Shaw allowed that run to score, and one of his own on a Ken Caminiti gopher, before Jeff Brantley overcame some sabotage defense and recorded his 11th save.

The Padres outhit the Reds 10-7, and had 2 doubles, a triple and a gopher while all 7 Cincy hits were singles.  The Reds went 2 for 13 with RISP, which though abysmal is actually a good day by our standards.  Thankfully the Padres were even worse at 1 for 9.

=========================================================================

Game 3: The floodgates opened early and often against the Reds today, with starter Kent Mercker being surgically dismembered beyond belief (4 IP, 15 hits, 11 runs).  All 11 runs were scored as "earned" somehow, despite the best efforts of ex-Padre Chad Curtis to endear himself to his former club.  Curtis choked up a pair of timely throwing errors and a blown-x double before he was forcibly removed from the game with 0 out and 3 runs in -- mainly thanks to him -- in the middle of the SDN 5th.

SDN starter Andy Ashby had a blessed day on the mound and at the plate, going 4 for 4 with at least 1 hit off his own sparse card and a successful bunt single.  San Diego second baseman Randy Velarde, who entered the series struggling to stay ahead of the Mendoza Line, had an excellent series which was capped by a 5 for 6 performance with 3 runs & 3 RBI in this fiasco.

Final score: 13-3, with 23 hits recorded by the home team against Mercker and hapless reliever Keyser.  It will be noted for future reference that the Padres were stealing bases while up by 10 runs in their final at bats of the day.

Atoning for yesterday's clutch failure, the Padres racked up a 10 for 18 record with RISP as the breaks never stopped coming.

Alan
