Is Toronto's hitting that bad or did Boston pitching figure it out for 34 of the 36 innings? Sox win the first 3 before Toronto avoids the sweep. game 1: Oleary doubled and scored on a Valentin single in the 2nd to put Boston on top. Greenwell homered leading off the 4th to double the lead. In the 9th, Boston got single double single to start the inning to again double their lead. The next 2 batters walked to load the bases but Boston could do no more damage. It didn't matter as Clemens was unhittable, as in he took a no hitter into the 9th inning. After a leadoff flyout, Valentin threw a ball into the stands for a 2 base error. Delgado then rolled a clutch single but luckily just one out at the time. Up stepped Joe Carter and he rolled a bp single. At just a 1-4 hit chance, Sox players were ready to rush the mound to celebrate the no hitter. You don't have to know the Sox luck with splits to know that it was a hit(split of 2). Clemens got Olerud to ground out to finish the 1 hitter and Boston won 4-0. game 2: Toronto didn't get their first hit until the 4th inning of this one (they did get 2 free passes). They started the 4th with 3 of the first 4 batters getting hits to take a 1-0 lead. Boston bats were silent until the 7th. JEfferson and Vaughn led off with singles and Naehring was plunked to load the bases. A wild pitch would be the only run Boston got out of it to tie the game. With 2 out in the 8th, Jefferson singled and Vaughn slammed a 2 run homer to make Boston a 3-1 winner. Wasdin went 8.1 innings and copied Clemens with 3 walks and 10 strikeouts. Henry got the last 2 outs for his 7th save. game 3: Aaron Sele took his turn in shutting down the Jays offense. He went 7 innings and allowed just 1 run, a bp homer to slugger Luis Alicea in the 4th. Eusebio (who went 4-4) had an rbi single in the 3rd and Boston had a 3 run 5th. After Jefferson capped the inning with an rbi triple, Mo Vaughn was hit by a pitch (the second hbp of the inning) and tempers flared momentarily. Eusebio had an rbi double in the 6th and McCarty an rbi single in the 9th to make the final 6-1. game 4: Bill Selby's first homer of the year gave Boston a 2-0 lead in the 3rd and signaled hal to finally start treating Boston pitching as Boston pitching. Toronto opened the bottom of the third with a double and 2 walks to load the bases. All Star Ed Sprague then launched a bp grand slam. Another double followed before Gordon finally got an out. That runner would come around on a sac fly to make it a 5-2 game. Boston got single runs in the 4th, 5th and 7th to tie the game. The last 2 were also driven in by Selby as he had a great day at the plate. Head to the bottom of the 9th. After a lead off ground out, Gonzalez reached on an error by the catcher. Left handed hitting Martinez then doubled against the lefty pitcher Eshelman but some how Gonzo was thrown out at the plate. No matter, Green stepped in and rolled hr 1-4 double for the win. Of course HAL had to make sure it was the homer for the 2 run win. |
