Padres continue to confound the critics. After working their way to the bottom of the leauge, the Padres have now swept 2 straight road series.

game 1: This one was a pitchers duel to start but the final score wouldn't show that. This one was scoreless until the 6th. 3 straight 1 out singles loaded the bases and the Padres finally got on the board on a Cangelosi fielders choice. Padres again used 3 straight singles to load the bases in the 7th, this time to start the inning. After 2 outs it looked like the Cubs would be out of the inning but a Joyner single and a wild pitch brought in 2 runs. In the 8th, Gomez missed that hr 1-10 on his card for yet another time, settling for an rbi double as part of a 3 run inning as the Padres pulled away for the 6-0 win. Watson and Cook held the Cubs to just 3 hits, one a split of 2 on a 1-4 bp single chance and another a split of 1 on an x play in the 9th for a double. Padres left 10 on to the Cubs 4. Padres missed a chance at their 4th triple play of the season in the 2nd. With 2 on, Arias got the line out max but there was 1 out so it was just a dp.

game 2: Both defenses tried to give this one away repeatedly. Padres used hbp, hit and run dp, single, single, walk, single to score twice in the first. Cubs first batter reached on a 2 base error, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored as part of their 2 run inning. In the 3rd, Erstad reached on a Sosa error and Caminiti followed with a 2 run homer. In the bottom of the inning, Hernandez had a 2 out 2 run double and then scored on a single to give the Cubs the lead. In the 4th, the Padres used 2 singles, a bunt and 2 more singles to take the lead back. Like game 1, the Padres pulled away late. Gomez had an rbi double in the 8th (not a missed hr though) and Santiago a 2 run double in the 9th to make the final 9-5.

game 3: Another tight start and another late pull away by the Padres. With 2 out in the 3rd, McRae got hit by a pitch, stole 2nd and then scored on a single+error for an unearned run. In the 5th, Jones and Finley hit solo homers to put the Padres up 1.In the 8th, Sandberg's bases loaded, 2 out error gave the Padres a run In the 9th, 2 singles and an hbp loaded the bases with one out, but the Padres got just 1 run on a groundout and left the bases loaded for the 2nd straight inning. Hoffman made things interesting, giving up a hr to Sosa on a split of 5, an x play single on a split of 1 and a walk to strikeout machine Hernandez,  but held on for his 19th save in the 4-2 win. Speaking of strikeout machines, Tony Gwynn struck out for just the 7th time all year, on a roll of 4-2.
