Subject: BAA @ OAA Week 18

(Note: No new CM for Week 19.)

The way Robby Alomar hit in Games 2 and 3 of this series, the O's might have gotten a sweep if they hadn't rested him in Game 1.

Game 1: OAA 3, BAA 0

Ernie Young singled in a run in the 2nd to give Oakland an early lead, then homered in the 5th to make it 2-0. Adding insult to injury, Oakland's George Williams (BA .105) got his first homer of the year in the 7th.  Juan Guzman got the complete game shutout, allowing just four hits.

Game 2: BAA 9, OAA 5

In the top of the first, the O's Jacob Brumfield singled in a run before getting picked off first to kill a possible rally.  The lead didn't last long, as Jose Canseco homered and Geronimo Berroa got an RBI double to key a three-run A's rally in the bottom of the inning.  Brent gates made it 4-1 with an RBI double in the 2nd.  In the 3rd, Rafael Palmeiro singled in a run to cut the lead to 4-2 but them made an error that helped Oakland counter with an unearned run.  Baltimore scraped their way back into the game, scoring on a fielder's choice in the 5th and a homer by Mike Stanley in the 7th.  After leaving 7 runners in scoring position through the first 7 innings, the Orioles finally broke through in the 8th, as Craig Biggio singled in two runs and Palmeiro followed with a homer for an 8-5 lead. The O's added a bases-loaded walk in the top of the 9th.  In the bottom of the frame, the stage seemed set for a dramatic A's comeback with two on, one out, Jose Canseco at bat, and Mark McGwire on deck -- but Canseco lined into a game-ending double play.

Game 3: BAA 13, OAA 6

In the 1st inning, Baltimore scored 4 runs thanks in large part to Brady Anderson's two-run triple, but a passed ball helped the A's get one run back, In the 2nd, Brumfield singled in a run, but Mike Bordick's two-run homer cut the lead to 5-3.  Robby Alomar singled in a run for the O's in the 4th and hit a two-run homer in the 6th; later in the inning, Stanley added a three-run bomb for an 11-3 lead.  The fans that stuck around got plenty of souvenirs -- Oakland got solo HRs off the Baltimore bullpen in the 6th, 7th, and 8th, while Brumfield hit one out for two more O's runs in the 7th.

In Games 2 and 3 combined, Alomar went 10-for-12 with four doubles, a homer, 7 runs, 3 RBIs, and two steals.  Overshadowed was Young's 6-for-11 performance for the A's.
