Previous message                 Next message Message #: 33327 Message from: Charlie Steinhice Sent: Sep 13, 2015 Subject: BAA @ NYA Week 19 (plus Week 20 CM) The Yankees showed why they have such a huge lead in the AL East, taking three of four from the Orioles. Game 1: BAA 6, NYA 5 New York wasted no time taking a 3-0 lead in the 1st on RBI singles by Bernie Williams and Tino Martinez.  But the Orioles got to Andy Pettitte in the 3rd; after a two-run homer by Craig Biggio, Cal Ripken got a clutch two-out, two-run double to put Baltimore ahead 4-3.  Both teams had plenty of scoring opportunities, but there was no more scoring till the 7th.  Rafael Palmeiro singled in a run and Robby Alomar added a pinch-hit sac fly for two Orioles runs, which the Yankees matched with a Paul O'Neill single that ended a brief but awful outing for reliever Arthur Rhodes.  However, the rest of the Orioles bullpen rose to the occasion, including Armando Benitez, who faced one batter to earn his first save.   Game 2: NYA 7, BAA 1 Another RBI single by Martinez put the Yankees on the board in the first, and Daryl Strawberry went deep in the 2nd to make it 2-0.  Derek Jeter and Wade Boggs each singled in a run in the 4th.  After another appearance by "reliever" Rhodes loaded the bases in the 5th, Joe Girardi singled through the drawn-in infield for a 6-0 lead. Mariano Duncan drove in an insurance run in the 8th.  Alomar's 6th inning solo homer was the first of only three hits allowed by David Cone, who got the complete game win. Game 3: NYA 10, BAA 5 The Yankees again drew blood in the 1st, this time on a two-run long ball by Duncan.  Ripken hit a solo HR in the 2nd, Duncan doubled in another in the 3rd before Curt Schilling struck out Cecil Fielder with the bases loaded to hold the Yankees' lead to 3-1.  Jacob Brumfield homered in the 4th to make it a one-run game, but grounded into a bases-loaded double play in the 5th.  In the bottom of the 5th, Bernie Williams tripled in a run; later in the inning, the Orioles manager visited the mound but opted not to use Rhodes again and left starter Curt Schilling in.  The result: A three-run Martinez homer and a 7-2 lead. In the 7th, the O's got three runs on a sac fly and a two-run HR by Mark Smith. but New York promptly got two of them back on a double by Jeter.  Fielder's sac fly in the 8th finished out the scoring.   Game 4: NYA 10, BAA 7 This time the Orioles put up a crooked number in the 1st, thanks to a two-run Ripken double.  It took a sac bunt and a sac fly for the O's to score a run in the 2nd, but  just one swing by Brady Anderson to make it 4-0 in the 3rd.  A sac fly in the top of the 5th gave the O's a five-run lead.... which the Yankees had already tied in the bottom of the inning when Scott Brosius hit a grand slam to put New York ahead 9-5.  In the 8th, the O's scored two runs on fielder's choices -- hardly the recipe for a big inning -- and then gave one back on a throwing error.
