Subject: Reds @ Expos
The Reds played adequately enough aside from the middle game where an unhealthy dose of sabotage defense and a patented bullpen meltdown combined to cost us a game by the margin of -- what else? -- one run. All series long the Reds couldn't resist hitting into double plays when we weren't busy losing numerous high-percentage runners on the bases via CS, pickoffs and the occasional play at the plate.... Game 1: Reggie Sanders bopped a pair of home runs which helped starter A.J. Sager to a 4-0 lead in the 6th. Sager had allowed just 1 hit up to that point, a low-percentage split card outcome by Jeff Bagwell in the 4th. Then the Expos led off the 6th with a gopher (split card: 1) and Bagwell singled (split card: 1) home a runner later in that frame to cut the Cincy lead in half. Sager faced no more jams however, and Jeff Brantley managed to get through the 9th without inducing a managerial heart attack as he so often does. Final score: 4-2, with the MON offense producing just 4 hits. Marvin Freeman started for the Expos and gave up 12 baserunners in less than 6 IP but was relatively unscathed due to our usual dearth of clutch hits and the aforementioned baserunning & timely DP shenanigans. ==================================================================================== Game 2: HAL zeroed in early on Kevin Jarvis' weak spots (hardly a difficult feat), giving the Expos 5 straight singles off the hapless pitcher's card to open the MON 2nd. But it wasn't all the fault of the guy on the mound -- THREE of those hits were timely blown-x plays which served up a quick 4-0 lead to the Expos on a silver platter. Then it was the Reds cutting a lead in half via a pair of triples in the 3rd, but Darrin Fletcher's second gopher of the series in the 3rd made the score 5-2 and another Montreal gopher in the 4th upped our deficit to 4 runs. There was a wee bit of wildness on the part of Todd Stottlemyre in the CIN 6th with 6 free passes and a wild pitch, and somewhere in the middle of all that Kevin Mitchell took Jarvis off the hook with a pinch-hit GRAND SLAM which tied the score (the wild pitch then gave us a momentary 7-6 lead) before we LOBbed the bases loaded on our way to double figures in that department. Arsonist Jeff Shaw wasted no time and turned a 2-out bases empty situation into the tying run half an inning later when he coughed up a double and another low split-card RBI single. The Reds reversed that situation -- from nobody on and 2 outs, to 2 men on base with nobody out -- in the 8th but the clutchless wonders who came up next advanced the runners not one inch. Finally the third gopher bite of the day came in the 8th and proved fatal, resulting in yet another 1-run loss when MON closer Mel Rojas (who normally pitches so badly that he'd fit in nicely with the Cincy bullpen) simply blew away the Reds in the 9th. Final score: 8-7. ==================================================================================== Game 3: The Cincy batters did amazingly well against tough Pedro Martinez (7 IP, 11 hits, 5 runs), reaching him for a 3-spot in the first inning though it took Luckless Dave Burba just 2 batters in the bottom of the 1st to commence giving it back. That goal was achieved in the 4th when the score became 3-3 shortly after the Reds had seen yet another of our baserunners gunned down on the paths. Burba got tough for a change and closed out his stint on the hill with 4 scoreless frames and the Reds took the lead in the 6th when Eric Davis led off with a split card home run (a mere 1-19 chance, but he hit it!) and Eddie Taubensee followed with an RBI single that made the score 5-3. A leadoff homer by Hal Morris 2 innings later provided one more insurance run and Brantley pitched an uneventful 9th to collect his 22nd save. Final score: 6-3. Morris & Davis combined for 6 hits, 13 total bases, and scored 5 of the 6 Cincy runs. Alan |
