Subject: Reds @ Braves

The Reds do better than expected against the Braves, taking 2 of 3 despite a massive LOB "advantage", before the gophers swarmed poor Mark Langston in the series finale....

Game 1: Atlanta got 100% of the breaks at the outset of the game against Kent Mercker, who suffered though another miserable start albeit a brief one (4 IP, 6 hits, 3 runs).  Tom Glavine took a 3-0 lead into the sixth where the Reds finally broke his spell with a leadoff home run by Barry Larkin.

Bret '2e8' Boone's routine botches in the field were costly early on, but he atoned for them with a 2-run homer in the 7th which tied the contest.  Cincy loaded the bases in the 8th but the score remained tied as we tacked 3 more onto our eventual total of 11 LOB via a typical 1 for 9 performance in clutch situations.

That '1' came off the bat of Chris Sabo in the 9th, when instead of LOBbing the bases loaded he cleared them with a double off reliever Greg McMichael.  Hector Carrasco went the final 3 innings for the Reds and although HAL zeroed in on his weakest column as often as possible, Carrasco dodged all bullets and earned his 2nd win of the season.  Final score: 6-3.

The Reds had 18 total bases to ATN's 11 and drew 8 free passes while permitting 3.

Game 2: It looked to be a real mismatch between Greg Maddux and Luckless Dave Burba, and the final score made it appear to be exactly that (but not the way anyone expected), though it really wasn't.

There was nary a peep out of either team's offense until the 5th when the Reds turned 3 singles and some aggressive baserunning into 2 runs.  It took L.D.B. exactly 2 batters (single, gopher) to forfeit the lead.  Lead Glove Larkin then contributed a helpful error and the runner wound up on third with just one out, but Chad Curtis gunned him down at the plate after a flyout to maintain the deadlock.

The Reds would also lose a runner in precisely the same fashion later in the game, but in the meantime the Cincy offense assaulted reliever Terrell Wade for 5 runs in less than 2 innings of work, while Burba held his ground after that one gopher pitch and cruised to a surprising 8-2 win on a 5-hitter.

It took over 20 weeks, but Burba (8-11) finally pitched up to the level of his card and lowered his season ERA beneath 5.0.  The Cincinnati batsmen backed their hurler with 13 hits including 6 doubles (1 by Burba himself) and an Eric Davis home run.

==========================================================================================

Game 3: The Reds got a run in the second inning while Mark Langston mowed down the Braves without a hit through 3 frames.  Turns out they were just measuring Langston for his coffin; the 10th batter he faced inflicted the first gopher bite on the CIN lefty, another timely error by Larkin a stanza later opened the gopher cage again and slugger Mark Lemke delivered a 3-run blow.  In the next inning, it was a 2-out, 2-run bite from Andruw Jones and Langston was D.O.A., as was his team.

Final score: 6-2.  Each team collected only 6 hits, but the Atlanta offense could hardly have been any more efficient as they LOBbed a mere 1 runner.  The only hit of note for the Reds on this day was a solo home run by Chad Mottola in the 8th.
