Previous message                 Next message Message #: 33441 Message from: Charlie Steinhice Sent: Sep 27, 2015 Subject: BAA @ KCA Week 21 (plus Week 22 CM) The wild card-leading Orioles visited the team with the league's worst record... and got swept in particularly painful fashion. Game 1: KCA 6, BAA 5 The Orioles got five runs before KC's Ricky Bones retired a single batter... and then the rain started and wiped those runs out.  (Translation: I started playing this game before noticing that I needed to wait for a new Royals CM, and had to wipe it out & start over.) Kansas City jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first thanks to a Jermaine Dye homer.  The Orioles didn't get on the board until Cal Ripken hit a solo HR in the 6th, but the Royals answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame for a 5-1 lead, thanks in part to two wild pitches by Baltimore reliever Ron Blazier.  In the 7th, Brady Anderson doubled in a run and scored on a single by Rafael Palmeiro to cut the lead in half, and Craig Biggio's two-run homer tied the game in the top of the 8th.  Both teams missed scoring opportunities until the 11th, when KC's Tom Goodwin singled and stole second and third to set up the inevitable walkoff single by Joe Vitiello.   Game 2: KCA 6, BAA 5 A usage-driven start by Baltimore's Rocky Coppinger got off to a, well, rocky start in the 1st.  Bob Hamelin singled in a run before Coppinger got bailed out by a double play.  Hamelin made it 3-0 with a two-run double in the 3rd, Blazier relieved Coppinger in the 6th and was greeted right away with a Hamelin homer.  Kevin Appier held the Orioles at bay, but the O's finally broke through against the KC bullpen in the 7th.  After Mike Blowers hit a two-run triple, the O's drew four straight walks to tie the game, then took a 5-4 lead thanks to an error by Lenny Harris. However, the Royals retook the lead in the bottom the inning on a Mike Macfarlane homer. In the top of the 8th, with two on and no outs, Baltimore opted not to pinch-run for lead-footed BJ Surhoff and therefore missed the chance to score on two would-be sac flies.  The 9th was even more frustrating, as Brady Anderson couldn't deliver on a high-odds bunt attempt, again just ahead of a long flyout, and the inning ended with the bases loaded.  Hamelin wound up a triple short of the cycle.   Game 3: KCA 12, BAA 3 Both teams scored on RBI groundouts in the 1st.  The Royals took the lead in the second on a two-out single by Doug Strange (on-base chance of .191 on paper.)  In the 4th, the O's tied the game 2-2 on a wild pitch, then gave the run right back with a two-base error that set up Greg Gagne's RBI single.  In the 6th, Palmeiro homered for another short-lived tie, as Strange doubled with two out in the bottom of the inning to put KC back ahead 4-3.  The Royals blew the game open in the 7th as Macfarlane hit a two-run jack and David Howard added an RBI single. It got worse in the 8th when Harris singled in a run and Macfarlane added another homer, this time for three runs.  Jeff King tacked on a solo homer later in the inning for the final run.
