Sox go north of the border and take 3 out of 4. Toronto was shut out twice and scored 1 run in another but still outhit and outscored Boston for the series (see game 2). game 1: Kevin Gross went against his old teammates while a very hittable Jeff Ware took the mound for Toronto. The first hit of the game didn't occur until 1 out in the bottom of the 4th. Ware was perfect through 4 then walked 2 in both the 5th and 6th. Vaughn finally got Boston's first hit to lead off the 7th and he scored Carter and Nixon collided on Dax Jones' flyball that was ruled a double. Toronto added a hit in the 9th and that was it. 1 run and 4 hits combined as Boston won 1-0. Should have known it would be a bad one as Boston's first split was a 20. game 2: For the second straight game Vaughn's first at bat was a split of 20, but this time it was an rbi single at least. Shelby followed with smash to third that became a single+error to score Vaughn and boston had a quick 2-0 lead. That lasted a few seconds as Toronto would light up the scoreboard, scoring in 7 of the 8 innings. They hit 6 home runs (all on single digit splits). John Wasdin allowed 1 run in 8.1 innings in his first start for Boston(also against toronto). This time he gave up 11 runs in 6 innings (10 earned). Jeff Suppan made his 1996 debut and immediately gave up a homer to his first batter. Liking that so much he gave up a leadoff homer in the 8th inning as well and surrendered 7 runs altogether. Up 18-2 Toronto was still trying to steal and take extra bases. Apparently they weren't watching what happened last week when the opponent stole with a large lead. Clemens beat his old team easily although they did get 7 hits in 7 innings off him. How bad were things in this one. Boston had 8 split chances (2 20's both by Vaughn 2 19s and an 18) with only 3 being single digit. Toronto had 12 of 16 being 10 or less and 3 of the 4 that were double digit still ended up being doubles. Add in 5 or 6 x play singles and Toronto got just about every break they could. game 3: Tim Wakefield did get "revenge" but it took until the 6th inning for him to hit Brito. Toronto was apparently worn out from circling the bases in game 2 as they reverted back to game 1 and got shutout on just 2 hits. Meanwhile, Haselman had a sac fly in the 2nd, Oleary homered in the 6th, Bragg a 2 run homer in the 7th and Valentin an rbi single in the 8th as Boston won 5-0. game 4: Chris Haney turned in probably his best performance of the year, tossing a complete game win. He allowed 10 hits (0 walks and 9 k's with 1 hbp) with several bp 1-4 successes thrown in there. After 2 walks in the first, Vaughn didn't leave it to chance and hit a 3 run auto hr to give Haney enough offense. Vaughn added a 2 run shot in the 7th to cap a 4-5 5 rbi game. Boston coasted to an 8-1 win. |
