Subject: Reds @ Cubs

The N.L. Central race has been far more of a struggle for the Reds than it should have been, but this series served to make the race a little less interesting -- for the moment -- even though usage-challenged players such as Jeff Brantley, Barry Larkin and Willie Greene were given most or all of the series off and the Cincy LOB Machine was working overtime (49)....

Game 1: The Cubs had their chances (20 AB with RISP) and got their hits (6 with RISP, 15 altogether) as CIN starter Kent Mercker was shaky and arsonist Jeff Shaw was typical.  The Cincy D "pitched in" in their accustomed fashion with 3 errors good for 2 critical unearned runs as well.  Amazingly the Reds, despite being held to 9 hits & 11 total bases and benefitting from nary an opponent error (though 8 free passes did help), came out on top by the count of 9-7!

Down 3-1 after 5 innings, the visitors broke on top with 3 runs in the 6th before LOBBing 2 more RISP.  However the first costly gaffe by the Cincy defense in the 7th put an undeserved runner aboard and Ryne Sandberg immediately followed with a gopher that put the Cubs up 6-4 and added one more digit to Shaw's blown save column.

The Reds came back with 2 outs (!) in the 8th and just a runner on first base.  Bob Wickman, the first of SEVEN Chicago relievers used in the final 2 frames, wild pitched the runner to second from where he scored on Thomas Howard's single.  Two more singles followed, with pinch-hitter Chad Mottola delivering the tying run.

An HBP and 2 BBs loaded the sacks for the Reds in the 9th, Howard's sac fly broke the tie and Eddie Taubensee's double provided some breathing room.  Since the defense coughed up 2 more errors in the bottom of the 9th, that breathing room was reduced but fortunately not eliminated when A.J. Sager limited the damage to just 1 unearned run and earned his 10th win of the season in the process.

Game 2: The Reds continued the series-long theme of scoring in the late innings -- today it was our ONLY scoring -- and prevailed 5-4 in 14 innings despite 16 LOB to CHN's 8 and 2 timely rally-killing GIDPs.

CHN starter Darryl Kile pitched into the seventh and left with a shutout still going and 3 runs of support to assist him.  Wickman, one of yesterday's goats, redeemed himself today -- temporarily -- by fanning clutchless Cincy outfielder Eric Davis with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the 7th to preserve the 3-run margin.

Wickman ran into little resistance in the CIN 8th (single followed by timely GIDP) but the 9th was slightly different.  Tony Phillips drove in a pair with a double to reduce the Cubs' lead to 3-2 and Davis tied it with a sac fly before Hal Morris tripled off David West to give the Reds a sudden 4-3 lead with 3 outs left to get for reliever Buddy Groom.

He got them, but not before the Cubs scored without a hit (walk, SB, groundout, RBI groundout) and we proceeded to extras during which time neither team bothered to threaten much until the 14th.

Usual starter turned emergency reliever Sager ended the CIN 14th at the plate by fanning with (what else?) the bases loaded, but his teammates previously got 4 runners on base during that frame and scratched out 1 run, and Sager got the job done in the bottom of the 14th for his 11th win.  Final score: 5-4 as the Reds combine dual rarities -- an extra-inning win (a dismal 4-8 in overtime now) and a 1-run win (our 19th against 23 losses).

============================================================================================

Games 3 & 4: The games were quite close though the final scores (10-2, 9-2) were not.  Through 7 innings the Reds only had easily-blowable leads of 2-1 and 2-0 respectively.  CIN starters John Smiley & Russ Springer completed 17 of the 18 IP while the offense outhit Chicago 20-5 in game 3 (nearly all LOB until an 8-run 9th) and got a 7-run 8th in the finale.

Massive underachiever Charlie O'Brien had his best day of the year in game 3 (5 2 4 2 with a 2B and HR) which finally raised his average to .200 before he slipped back down below the Mendoza Line in game 4.  Chad Curtis went a combined 11 4 6 5 in the two contests with a pair of doubles and a home run.

The Reds now lead by 9 with 21 to play, and just how much of a free-fall (not "if", but "how much") we'll go into from here remains to be seen.

Alan
