This big wild card showdown settled nothing as the teams split the 4 games.

game 1: Once you see the final score you'll find it hard to believe this was scoreless until the bottom of the 6th. A one out single was followed by 3 straight walks to force in a run. That lead lasted one batter as Vaughn led off the 7th with a homer. 2 singles and an hbp loaded the bases with 1 out. After out 2, Baltimore returned the favor and walked in a run and Frye hit a 2 run "grand slam", being a W he settled for the 2 run single instead. Bragg followed and got an actual home run to cap the 7 run inning. This being the Red Sox, no lead is safe. A lead off single was followed with 2 outs before Biggio walked and Anderson hit a 3 run homer to make it 7-4. Sele came out in the 8th to face the right handed Ripken and that backfired as Ripken homered. Eschelman came on and gave up a single and got an out before Wasdin came on and gave up a walk, single and hbp to allow a run and load the bases before he got out #3. With the lead cut to one, Boston got a walk, 3 singles and a double in the 9th but only scored twice thanks to a line drive double play (one of 4 they hit into for the game). Boston won 9-6.

game 2: Boston outhit the O's 7-6 for the game. One of Boston's left the park, 4 of Baltimore's did, including their first 3 hits. That was the difference as Baltimore won 5-3.

game 3: Going to the bottom of the 4th, Gordon had allowed a leadoff single in the first but no other hits. 7 batters later that was up to 7 hits as Baltimore banged out 6 hits, including a triple and 2 homers, in a 6 run inning. The big blow was a grand slam by Jesse Levis (his first homer of the year) on a 1-4 chance They bunched their remaining 4 hits together in the 6th for 3 more runs. Meanwhile Arthur Rhodes was dominating on the mound. He struck out 14 and lost his shutout in the 9th inning. Baltimore rolled to a 9-1 win.

game 4: The team that lives by the homer dies by the homer. Mouton opened the game with a double, went to third on a bunt and scored on a rare Alomar error. Biggio's rbi single in the bottom of the inning tied it but Boston went right back on top in the 2nd on a Naehring single but left the bases loaded. Baltimore took the lead in the 5th on a Brumfield 2 run homer and Blowers added an insurance run on a solo homer in the 6th. In the 7th, Vaughn was pitched around with a runner on and 2 outs and drew a walk. David McCarthy followed a got a 2 on his 1-3 hr chance to Boston on top. Oleary singled and Naehring capped the inning with a 2 run homer of his own to give Boston the 7-4 win. Corsi came on to retire the last 2 batters but did not get credited with a save
