Subject: Reds @ Pirates

Facing a depleted Pittsburgh squad, the Reds choke away 2 games in our inimitable fashion (1-run losses #24 and #25) before restoring order with a couple of semi-blowout wins....

Game 1: Cincy starter A.J. Sager was staked to a 4-1 lead in the middle innings but a couple of surgical split cards in the PIN 7th tied the score and the choke was completed in the bottom of the 11th when reliever Kent Mercker walked the bases loaded with nobody out; the inevitable losing run followed immediately.  Final score: 5-4.  The majority of the regular Arson Squad was given the series off, but Mercker filled in admirably.

The Reds kept our LOB count to a minimum by having 2 runners gunned down on the bases and 3 more erased via timely rally-killing GIDPs.  Twenty of the 21 hits in the contest were singles (Terry Pendleton's RBI double the lone exception) and the teams combined to issue 15 free passes in a sloppy affair.

================================================================================

Game 2: Cincy starter John Smiley was staked to an 8-1 lead in the middle innings but a key blown-x play by the most underachieving defense in the league was the key to a surgical 6-run comeback with all runs "earned" but hardly deserved.

Mercker (1.2 IP, 3 runs) continued his successful arsonistic audition and eventually donated the tying run, but recently reactivated Hector Carrasco was the one to complete the choke in, of course, the bottom of the ninth.  Final score: an 8-1 lead becomes a 9-8 loss.  Nobody does it better than the Reds.

Batting practice machine Elmer Dessens started for the Pirates and the Reds had their fun with him, but once he was knocked out the faucet was closed.  The Reds managed just 1 hit and no walks in 5 innings against the stalwart Bucco bullpen.

================================================================================

Game 3: This one started as a blowout in the wrong direction.  The Cincy D came to the Pirates' aid right from the beginning, a blown-x on the first play of the game directly resulting in four undeserved runs going up on the board, and an actually-deserved run in the 2nd made it 5-0 against the Reds.

In the CIN 3rd, Eric Davis of all people came through with a home run that capped a 5-run outburst, all 5 scoring with 2 outs (!).  Two frames later Davis delivered another 2-out homer to put the Reds up 7-5 and we cruised from there to a 10-5 win.

Kevin Jarvis went the distance vs. seven Pirate pitchers, surviving the early sabotage to raise his record to 7-1.  The first 5 hitters in the Cincy lineup combined for 12 of the 13 hits today and all 10 RBI, while the 6 through 9 slots went 1 for 16.

================================================================================

Game 4: The Reds' D continued to do its well-timed damage, but the Pirates retaliated with "quantity" by committing six errors which helped the Reds win by the score of 11-6.  The miscues didn't really affect the outcome, which would have been a final score of 7-4 had only earned runs counted for both teams.

Mark Langston notched win #10 and had one of his better outings of the season (6 IP, 2 ER and just 7 baserunners) while Pittsburgh's John Ericks and a couple of relievers were knocked around for 15 hits in addition to all the errors.  Russ Springer supplied 3 ineffective relief innings for the Reds but was charitably awarded a save, his 3rd.

The Reds (12 LOB) batted 21 times with RISP and came up empty 16 times but that's still an improvement over our usual rate.  Reggie Sanders had 4 hits including a homer, and Charlie O'Brien (.205 now, leaving Bret Boone as the only sub-.200 regular at the moment) had 3 hits including a homer, 3 RBI, and his league-leading 24th time being hit by a pitch.
