Subject: BAA @ TOA Week 23 (plus Week 24 CM)

The Orioles put up 12, 8, 10, and 2 runs, in that order, over four games in Toronto, As you might guess, they won three of four -- but the loss wasn't when you'd expect.

Game 1: BAA 12, TOA 9

Cal Ripken singled in two runs for the Orioles in the top of the 1st, but he was thrown out trying for second to end the inning, just as Mike Stanley was thrown out at home to end the top of the 2nd.  In the 3rd, Craig Biggio and Brady Anderson had no such issues as they trotted home after solo HRs to give Baltimore a four-run lead, but a wild pitch by Mike Mussina helped Toronto get score on a groundout to cut Baltimore's lead to 4-1.  The Jays roared back in the 4th, taking the lead thanks to two-run homers by Benito Santiago and Alex Gonzalez.
In the top of the 5th, Rafael Palmeiro hit one out to tie the game, and pinch-hitter Brett Bowers put the O's back on top with a bases-loaded double -- which only scored two runs as Mike Blowers was thrown out at home.  In the top of the 6th, Palmeiro doubled in two runs and scored on a double by Ripken, and Blowers atoned by singling Ripken home for an 11-5 lead.  Trying to preserve their usage-depleted bullpen, the O's left Mussina on the mound, and the Jays cut it to 11-8 on a Gonzalez double and a two-run Shawn Green single.  Santiago homered again in the 7th to make it a two-run game, and the Jays got the tying runs on base in the 8th but failed to score.  Baltimore scraped out an insurance run on a fielder's choice in the 9th, which turned out to be unnecessary as Randy Myers pitched a perfect 9th for his 22nd save.

Toronto was certainly the more efficient team offensively, scoring nine runs on just nine hits, while it took the O's 20 hits to get their 12 runs.

Game 2: TOA 9, BAA 8

If Baltimore misses the wild card by one game, this is one they'll especially regret.  This says it all: The O'sused eight pitchers in eight-plus innings.

Orioles starter Rick Krivda faced seven batters, and the only one he retired (Luis Alicea) drew a 13 split card when a 12 or below would have given him a 3-run homer... which instead went to the next batter, Alvaro Espinoza. Coupled with an earlier 2-run homer by Gonzalez, Krivda left trailing 5-0.  BJ Surhoff hit a 3-run homer in the top of the 3rd to get the O's back into the game, but Espinoza homered again in the bottom of the inning to make the score 6-3 Blue Jays.  Back-to-back homers in the 5th by Ripken and Keith Lockhart tied the game (and got the unworthy Krivda off the hook.)  In the 8th, Brady Anderson also went deep to give Baltimore a brief one-run lead, but Ed Sprague singled to tie it.  Still in the 8th, Santiago singled and slow-footed Sandy Martinez beat the throw home to score the go-ahead run.  The O's came back *again* to tie it in the 9th, thanks to pinch-hits by Robby Alomar and Mike Stanley, but Espinoza doubled to lead off the bottom of the 9th and scored the winning run on a well-executed squeeze bunt by Robert Perez.

In this game, Espinoza increased his homer total for the season by 100% and his RBI total by 33%.

Game 3: BAA 10, TOA 2

The top of the first featured language I've never seen before in a Strat-O-Matic game:
"High pop fly on the infield.
Who wants it?
NOBODY! The ball drops unattended.
Can't charge a team error,
so it's a hit.
Palmeiro takes first.
Real lapse by Toronto.
Alomar takes third.
Anderson takes second."
However, Ripken grounded into an inning-ending force out, and the Jays took a short-lived 1-0 lead in the bottom of the inning on a more conventional single by Joe Carter.  In the 2nd, Stanley went deep to tie the game, and then Surhoff doubled in the go-ahead run and scored on an Alomar single.  Still in the top of the 2nd, Anderson doubled Alomar home and scored on Palmeiro's homer to give Baltimore a 6-1 lead. Blowers tacked on another run with a 3rd inning homer, The teams traded runs in the 5th, as yet another Santiago homer canceled out an RBI single by Anderson.  In the 7th, a homer by Anderson and an RBI double by Blowers made it 10-2.  Anderson wound up a triple short of the cycle.  Orioles starter Charles Nagy gave the beleaguered bullpen a break by going the distance, allowing just five hits.

Game 4: BAA 2, TOA 1

Totally destroying the narrative for this series, Baltimore's Scott Erickson and Toronto's Pat Hentgen squared off in a pitchers' duel.  Keith Lockhart homered in the 2nd for a 2-0 Baltimore lead.  Toronto made it a one-run game in the 4th when Carlos Delgado doubled and Carter singled him home.  And that was it. Hentgen went the distance but took the loss; Erickson left after six-plus innings and watched with glee as the Orioles bullpen was inexplicably effective.

Stats notes: Toronto's seven homers in the series came from just three players (Santiago 3, Espinoza 2, Gonzalez 2.)  Baltimore also had three players combine for seven homers (Anderson 3, Palmeiro 2, Lockhart 2) but got one homer each from five other players (Biggio, Blowers, Ripken, Stanley, & Surhoff.)
