Subject: Reds @ Cardinals

The Reds demonstrate our patented choking method not once, not twice, but three times in the late innings of all 3 games, yet rebound just often enough -- once -- to clinch the N.L Central pennant.  The pair of losses were by our usual margin, making the Reds the first N.L. team to achieve the coveted 30 mark in 1-run losses in 1996....

Game 1: CIN starter Kevin Jarvis pitched an excellent game and was leading 3-1 in the bottom of the 9th.  He got 2 outs but in between them was a timely error by Jeff Branson where the game-ending out should have been.

You get one guess as to what the next batter did.

Following that gopher we went to extras where Branson came up with the bases loaded in the 11th, 2 outs, and the score still tied at 3.  Cincy batters were swinging for the fences all game long with 5 split card chances at homers (4 caught at the wall) and this was chance #6.  The split card naturally came up bad, but this time the ball ricocheted off the wall and the Reds were happy to settle for a triple.  One batter later we got a non-split card home run and wound up with an 8-3 win.

Scrub pitcher Jarvis so thoroughly dominated the game up until his unearned departure, that SLN only had one at bat all day with a runner in scoring position.

Meanwhile St. Louis' Jason Grimsley, who was just retrieved from the scrap heap a few days ago, wasn't rusty at all and pitched a fine game (8 IP, 3 runs).  The totally non-hitting pitcher even successfully found the one way to get on base on his own card while batting -- the walk on 2-10.  Somehow it wasn't costly.

=======================================================================================

Game 2: The Reds got starter John Smiley a run in the top of the first, a lead which was blown when Brian Jordan delivered a clutch single for the Cards in the 5th that produced a pair.  Our second sac fly of the contest knotted the score in the 6th and Smiley's 1-run lead was restored in the 7th while he was in the process of being pinch-hit for.

Choke #2 of the series, which followed immediately, couldn't be blamed on the defense at all.  Kent Mercker issued a free pass to the very first Cardinal batter in the bottom of the 7th, and nobody had a chance at making a play on the second batter since he put a Mercker pitch several rows up into the outfield stands.  That's as close to a 'Perfect Sambito' as you can get: 2 batters faced, 0 retired, 1 game-losing gopher.  Final score: 4-3, 1-run loss #29.

The Reds had particularly rotten luck with the split cards again: at one point in this game our batters drew 17 or higher on 8 of 10 chances.  Sadly, that average split of 18.6 was nowhere to be found when trying to throw a runner out at the plate in the 5th or permitting a gopher in the 7th.

=======================================================================================

Game 3: We emptied the bench a little less than usual in the final road game of the season, getting just 19 players into the act, and held a 6-3 lead in the middle innings.  Mark Langston had started and offered one of his better performances (3 IP, 1 run) of the season but 3 relievers equally divided the task of permitting 6 runs while the offense shut down.  Final score: 7-6.

For an unsurprising contrast in clutch hitting, the Reds LOBbed 12 to SLN's 5 and the Cardinals got all 7 RBIs after 2 were out in an inning.

Relief pitcher Scott Kamieniecki, in his final appearance as a Red, choked up the 2 losing runs in the St. Louis 8th (a bases-loaded HBP after 2 bases-loading walks was a nice touch).  After the game he had the honor of imitating a photo of Denny McLain from 1968, holding up a ball with the number '30' scrawled on it, though for a somewhat different reason than McLain.
