Subject: BAA @ BOA Week 25

There was a lot riding on this series, with the Orioles and Red Sox locked in a three-way fight for the wild card.  Each was hoping for a sweep, while the Mariners and/or Rangers were probably hoping for a series split.  The end result?  None of the above, as the Orioles took three of four and were left watching the scoreboard to find out their fate.

Game 1: BAA 8, BOA 2

Hoping that Boston's weaker stats vs. lefties was meaningful, the Orioles took a chance by starting Arthur Rhodes and his 8.23 ERA.  A sac fly by Craig Biggio put the Orioles on the board in the 3rd.  In the 6th, Boston starter Tim Wakefield plunked Brady Anderson for his AL-leading HBP of the year; a steal and a wild pitch later, Anderson scored on a Rafael Palmeiro single; Palmeiro eventually scored on Mike Stanley's sac fly for a 3-0 Baltimore lead.  Boston pulled within a run in the 7th on a two-run Dax Jones triple before leaving runners on the corners.  But that was as close as they got, because the Orioles blew it open in the 8th.  Stanley drove in two with a bases-loaded single, another run scored on a fielder's choice, and pinch-hitter Keith Lockhart singled in two more for the final margin.  Rhodes got his second win, pitching six scoreless innings while striking out six and walking none.

Game 2: BOA 5, BAA 3

Palmeiro singled in a run and BJ Surhoff doubled in another to give Baltimore a quick 2-0 1st inning lead, but Boston's Mo Vaughn took Charles Nagy deep in the 2nd to make it a one-run game.  Anderson took another HBP in the 3rd to set up an RBI single by Surhoff for the O's third run, but a wild pitch and a sac fly in the bottom of the frame tied the game up again.  The Red Sox took a 4-3 lead in the 6th on a Tim Naehring single, and Nomar Garciaparra tripled and scored on a sac fly in the 7th for a two-run lead.  The Orioles had more hits and walks than Boston, but failed to capitalize thanks in part to three Red Sox double plays and some poor baseruning decisions by the O's.

Game 3: BAA 11, BOA 4

This wasn't really the blowout the final score would imply.  Baltimore again tried a lefty starter with dubious credentials, Rick Krivda and his 7.20 ERA. Boston's James Mouton wasted no time, leading off the bottom of the 1st with a homer.  In the top of the 2nd, an error by Bill Haselman helped the Orioles take a 3-1 lead in a rally capped by Roberto Alomar's two-run single, and Stanley expanded the lead in the 3rd with a two-run homer off Chris Haney.  In the 4th, Jones took Krivda deep for his first homer of the season to make it 5-2.  The teams traded runs in the 5th on an RBI double by Cal Ripken and a single by Boston's Dave McCarty.   In the 6th, Jacob Brumfield chased Haney with an RBI single to give Baltimore a 7-3 lead.  Both teams scored a run in the 7th; Stanley homered for the Orioles, but Vaughn singled one in for Boston.  In the 8th, the Red Sox loaded the bases with one out and had a favorable matchup with pinch-hitter John Valentin against lefty reliever Mark Guthrie, but Biggio and Ripken got the critical 4-6-3 double play.  Biggio singled in a run in the 9th and scored on a Palmeiro homer to put the game out of reach.

Game 4: BAA 7, BOA 4

The Orioles had saved the last few innings available from their best starter, Curt Schilling, for the season finale.  Surhoff doubled in the game's first run in the top of the 1st.  In the 2nd, the Red Sox loaded the bases against Schilling with no outs, and Troy O'Leary and Garciaparra came through with RBI singles to give Boston a 3-1 lead.  Ripken cut the lead in half with a 3rd inning single.  In the 6th, after the O's loaded the bases with no outs against Bosox starter Aaron Sele, reliever Kevin Gross hit (who else?) Anderson to force in the tying run, but a force-out at the plate and an inning-ending double play kept the O's from taking the lead -- which loomed large in the bottom of the inning when Garciaparra doubled and Naehring beat the throw home for  the go-ahead run.  But the Orioles retook the lead in the 8th on a two-run Anderson homer, and Alomar added two more with a clutch two-out double in the 9th.
