(The series started out being played online for 2 innings, but technical
difficulties forced the game back to solo-play.) Pitching and defense ruled the opening contest, as the teams played on
relatively even terms. Of the 18 half-innings today 17 of them resulted in
the number '0' going up on the scoreboard. In such a close affair, luck
has a way of deciding the outcome so now you know which team lost. The Reds staved off defeat for a while by turning 3 helpful double
plays.... so naturally we negated that effort by rapping into 3 rally-killers of
our own. The latter was the significantly more difficult feat to
accomplish, since the Reds had practically no baserunners all day. The Reds staved off defeat for a while by inducing the Braves to bat a
microscopic .083 (1 for 12) with runners in scoring position.... so naturally we
negated that effort by putting up an even worse average under those
circumstances (.000). Cincy starter John Smiley successfully dodged bullets for a while, even
including a couple fired at him by his own defense (2 errors; ATN batted 1.000
on x-plays). Smiley escaped an error-walk combo which led off the ATN 2nd,
and the Reds were actually the first team to seriously threaten when we loaded
the bases with just 1 out in the 4th. It would be more accurate to say
that ATN starter John Smoltz loaded the bases for the Reds, as our batters had
little to do with it (walk, walk, sac bunt to avoid the inevitable DP,
intentional walk). Not rattled in the least, Smoltz easily retired the next pair of Clutchless
Wonders without the ball leaving the infield and the game proceeded scoreless
into the 6th. David Segui that frame opened with a single and Marquis Grissom doubled,
Segui beating the throw from the outfield thanks to fortuitous split card
#1. Seconds later, Chipper Jones rolled a 1-5 shot at a 2-run
gopher. That was the ballgame. Final score: 3-0. Of course we still had to play the final 3 1/2 innings, and the Reds
started off with some degree of resolve but were quickly demoralized when Jeff
'e52' Blauser at SS easily converted a near-certain error into an out, and Barry
Larkin followed with a better chance at a homer than Jones had, but drew an
18. That would be the last time a Red batter even came close to a hit. As
it turned out, Eddie Taubensee's single in the CIN 3rd (immediately erased by a
DP) was the ONLY thing separating Smoltz from a no-hitter. The Reds
otherwise found the opportunity to increase the LOB and DP counters only by
drawing walks, of which Smoltz issued 5 while blowing away 10 hapless batters on
strikeouts, the most important of the 10 being the one with the bases juiced in
the 4th. Game 2 will feature Tom Glavine vs. Dave Burba on the mound, then following
an off day the series will move to Atlanta to complete the sweep. Alan |
