Previous message                 Next message Message #: 33741 Message from: Alan Boodman Sent: Nov 12, 2015 Subject: ATN-CIN game 2 result and files Stop the presses!!!  The oddsmakers took a beating as the Cincinnati Reds won a game against the Atlanta Braves with the series now moving south for the final 2 (could even be 3) games.   Clutch hits were still nigh impossible to come by for either team; they combined to go 3 for 19 with RISP which explains how 22 runners could be stranded, 11 apiece.  It also helped that the DP count went from 6 in game 1 to zero today.   Atlanta scored a run off Dave Burba in the top of the first via the first two of several find-the-only-hit-in-the-column dice rolls today for the Braves.  Javy Lopez then doubled home a run with 2 outs, but when Chipper Jones tried to gallop all the way around from first he got a "Cincy Split" (20) and was gunned at the plate!   An event as shocking and unlikely as that often serves to alter the momentum of an entire game, and it took just 2 batters for the Reds to equal our entire hit total (1) from the series opener.  Two batters after that, substitute first baseman Kevin Mitchell paid an immediate dividend by delivering a 2-run homer off Tom Glavine which gave the Reds a lead they would not choke away (speaking of shocking and unlikely events).   Although baserunners were plentiful for the Braves, they would not score again.  Atlanta went 2 for 10 with RISP, which still outpaced the Reds (1 for 9) in that critical category.   The Reds got 2 RISP with 1 out in the 2nd and Burba came through with a sac fly to increase the lead to 3-1.  Tony Phillips missed a homer but got a double -- our one hit with RISP all day -- to add another run, and Glavine was sent to the showers after allowing 5 hits and 4 runs in 1.2 IP.   Four Braves' relievers permitted many runners but only a few runs over the final 6 frames, with Mitchell's second homer of the day and a 7th inning sac fly sewing up a 6-1 final.  Burba was removed for a pinch hitter in the 7th and Russ Springer took it from there, contributing 2 mostly uneventful innings.   The scheduled starting pitchers for game 3 in Atlanta represent an apparently grotesque mismatch: Greg Maddux vs. A.J. Sager.   However Maddux's record (15-12, 2.73) is not much different than Sager's was in 1996 (13-6, 2.75), but the oddsmakers are looking to get even real soon and it remains to be seen whether Sager's luck can hold up for just one more start.   Alan
