Subject: Yankees at Brewers
NEW YORK YANKEES AT MILWAULKEE BREWERS JULY 2-5, 1970 The holiday fireworks were being set off at County Stadium as the Yankees came to town. Even though they left after winning 3 of 4, the Brewer faithful saw a great display of baseball from both the visitors and the hometown teams. In game 1, Steve Kline went against Rich Hand. Kline was hit hard in the middle innings and left after surrendering leads of 2-0 and 3-2 after six innings. The Yanks scored two in the fourth off of Hand when Cater doubled. In the Brewer fifth, Hegan led off with a double and trotted home ahead of Cedeno when he took Kline deep to left field and tied the game. Cater tripled to lead off the sixth and scored on Clarken++s sac fly. The Brewers scored 3 times in their sixth with Cedeno again getting the big hit, a 2 run double. The Brew Crew added single runs in the seventh and eighth. The Yanks tried to rally in the ninth scoring once but could pull this one out of the fire. Yankees 4-6-0 Brewers 7-11-1 WP: Hand (6-5) LP: Kline (1-2) HRn++s: Cedeno #5 Before game 2, Ernie (Mr. Yankee) Banks said letn++s play two. So they did, almost. In a 17 inning game, The Yankees and Brewers tied the league mark for the longest game this season. Mel Stottlemyre started for the Yanks and he did not have his good stuff. He was gone after 4 innings down 5-0. The Brewers scored 2 in the second and left the bases loaded. They plated 2 more in the third but left 2 more stranded and had a runner cut down at the plate and scored one more in the fourth. Meanwhile, the Yanks were floundering. They stranded 1 in the first, 2 in the second, 1 in the third and Murcer was caught stealing in the fourth. Murcer and Tony Conigliaro each hit home runs to make it 5-4 Brewers after 6.5 innings. The Brewers hit Sparky Lyle hard in their seventh getting 2 runs themselves and seemingly icing the game. But Jim Roland, pitching in relief handed the game back to the Yanks by giving up 2 hits and 4 walks in the eighth and the Yanks tied the game. Then came 10 innings of shutout baseball. Ken Tatum pitched 5 innings and Ron Klimkowski pitched 4 for the Yanks while the Brewers used 5 pitchers in extra innings. Rich Hand was pitching his third inning of the game when Horrace Clarke singled to lead off the 17th. He stole second and third and scored on Mr. Yankeen++s sac fly. Cedeno went 5-8 in the game as he, Callison and Money had 11 of the Brewers 15 hits. Yankees 8-15-0 Brewers 7-15-1 17 inn. WP: Klimkowski LP: Hand (6-6) HRn++s: Murcer #9, Conigliaro #10 In game 3, the Yanks got what they needed, a long, somewhat quality start from Fritz Petersen and lots of early scoring. Petersen was able to go 8 innings and even though he gave up 10 hits, the Brewers could not score a run. Scoring 3 in the first, 5 in the third and three more in the fifth, it was 11-0 and even though Milwaukee got their knocks, they didn't plate any runs until the ninth. Of note here is that all Yankee starters got at least one hit and Petersen hit his 4th bomb of the year. Yankees 11-15-0 Brewers 2-10-1 . WP: Petersen (12-4) LP: Burnet (5-8) HRn++s: Petersen #4 Game 4 saw the only rested arm on the Brewers bench take the hill, Marty Patin and he gave the Yankees fits for the first 3 innings setting down 9 of the first 10 he faced. The Brewers collected single runs off of Yankee starter Stan Bahnsen in the second and the third. In the fourth, with Murcer and White aboard, Tony C. went deep for the second time this series after having gone over a month without a homerun. 2 doubles in the sixth put the Yankees up 4-3. Ted Kubiak tied the game as he took a tired Bahnsen deep with Cedeno aboard in the seventh. But Jake Gibbs led off the eighth with a triple and was plated when Jerry Kenny grounded out to first. Klimkowski and Tatum combined to keep the Brewers from scoring any more. Yankees 5-11-1 Brewers 4-11-0 WP: Bahnsen (8-9) LP: Gladding (4-5) SV: Tatum #14 HRn++s: Conigliaro #11, Kubiak #4 Series notes: Cesar Cedeno went 8-18, 5 runs and 6 rbi. Conigliaron++s home run on July 3rd was his first bomb since June 3rd at Milwaukee. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp |
