Central is over, as the Reds are likely to lose as many games in 1997 as we won in 1996 (91 + 2 in the playoffs).  Many good players have departed, and most of those who remain (Larkin, Morris, Sanders, Smiley, Branson....) are mere shells of what they recently were.  So now the unluckiest team in the league is also among the least talented and both of those traits were on full display in the 1997 opener.   Starting pitcher Tyler Green made his debut in a Cincy uniform and defied the odds by battling CHN starter Mark Clark to an almost literal draw in terms of IP, hits allowed, walks, total bases and *earned* runs allowed.    But there was one big inequality between the two.   CIN catcher Eddie Taubensee jumped out to a solid lead in the race to be the league's Least Valuable Player although certain aspects of this defeat were more team oriented, such as our ever-so-typical .000 batting average with runners in scoring position.   Taubensee went 0 for 4 at the plate, but since the bases were always empty he contributed nothing to today's 0 for 5 performance with RISP and will presumably get around to that later.   The Reds went down in order in the top of the first, and it took just one pitch in the bottom of the frame for HAL to illustrate how 1997 will be for the Reds.  Lance Johnson ripped Green's initial offering as a Red for a double and on his very next pitch Johnson broke for third.  The Chicago baserunner's time spent at the hot corner was minimal, as he jogged home immediately when the hapless Cincy catcher's throw sailed down the left field line for an error.   The visitors produced their first run of the campaign when Mike Smith & Bret Boone opened the 3rd inning with a single-double combo that put 2 RISP.  Naturally the next 3 batters made outs but the middle one was a slow grounder which advanced the runners and tied the contest at 1-1.   The deadlock lasted until the CHN 5th when Tyler Houston led off with a single and was bunted along to second.  Greg Gagne walked and non-hitting pitcher Clark stepped in and prepared to give himself up to advance the pair of runners.  Clark not only made it to first base, but his time spent there was minimal as he jogged to second immediately (and Houston crossed the plate) when the hapless Cincy catcher's throw sailed down the right field line for a 2-base error.   Then followed a surgical split card hit, a pair of stolen bases (the Reds yielded 4 on the day) and with 2 runners in scoring position another timely hit made it a 4-run inning, all of the damage resulting from the simple inability to retire a lumbering pitcher on a bunt attempt.   The outlook brightened briefly in the 8th when Dale Sveum got Cincy's first decent split card of the year and homered leading off, and later in the frame the Reds loaded the bases with 1 out and got another run home without obtaining a hit with RISP, before LOBbing them loaded.  The comeback attempt served to make defense -- the 2 unearned runs -- the precise difference in the 5-3 final score (CHN was a perfect 5 for 5 on x plays).   Dennys Reyes made his CIN debut in relief with a scoreless inning despite 2 hits and a heave to the backstop which the sympathetic official scorer determined was a wild pitch rather than a passed ball.  Jason Christiansen relieved Clark in the 7th for the Cubs and earned the save after some initial wildness that gave the Reds their 3rd run charged to the victorious starter.   Alan
