Subject: Reds @ Cubs

Game 2: The Reds took their first lead of the season when Willie Greene solo-homered in the top of the first.  The Reds choked away their first lead of the season instantly when Lance Johnson singled, stole second and raced to third on yet ANOTHER error by Taubensee (whose T-rating is not nearly a 20; it just seems like it) and scored seconds later on a Mark Grace double.  Sammy Sosa then rolled his column where all the homers are and, playing vs. the Reds, wasn't about to miss.

That made the score 3-1 and for all intents and purposes decided the outcome.  Each side later added a couple of runs to make it a 5-3 final.  For the second straight day a Cincy starter (Kent Mercker) was equally effective -- or in this case ineffective -- as the CHN starter (Darryl Kile) in every column except the one that counts the most, runs allowed.

Though we did get our first 2 hits of the year with RISP (our final ones of this series) the Cubs did better in that department and the Reds out-LOBbed them by a factor of 100% including leaving the bases loaded twice.  The Reds had more hits, more total bases, drew more walks and the 2 errors we committed led to 0 unearned runs for a change.  But like Mercker found out, leading in every column except the one that counts the most is pointless.

=============================================================================

Game 3: The Cincy quest for an 0-6 opening week was ruined (so we'll settle for 1-5) when a pair of rookie pitchers combined for a 2-0 win.  Chris Holt tossed the first 8 frames and new closer Scott Sullivan easily retired the Cubs in order in the bottom of the 9th.  All of the scoring came on one swing of the bat by Bret Boone, who narrowly failed to miss a 1-19 chance at a 2-run homer in the CIN 4th.

Each team allowed just 8 earned runs in this mostly inoffensive series, and both teams (even the Reds!) were superb in the field -- at least on x-plays -- with the Cubs converting 86% and the Reds an amazing 92% although we were able to throw away a game via errors without blowing any x-plays at all.

The Reds finished up with a sparkling 2 for 17 mark with RISP and in situations considered "clutch" by Strat was a perfect 0 for 8.

Taubensee's stats were possibly the worst in the history of baseball for a 3-game series: 0 for 11 at the plate with EIGHT strikeouts, 7 SB allowed, 1 WP, 1 PB, 3 errors, .786 fielding percentage.  On the other hand, nobody could possibly have done anything more to help his team get started down the road to that coveted #1 lottery seed.

Alan
