Opening the season in Coors Field is never a good idea unless you're a fan of football scores and cheap bp singles and homers. Padres some how manage to come away with a sweep and jump out to a 5-1 start to the year. game 1: Who would have thought a 5-4 game with both teams getting 9 hits would be considered a pitchers duel? It didn't even have to be in Denver as SD pitching is known for giving up the homers everywhere and this was no exception. All 4 Rockies runs came via the homer with 2 solo and a 2 run shot in there. Things got off to their usually good self with Tony Gwynn striking out in his first at bat of the year. Took HAL all of 2 batters in the bottom of the first to give SD their usual split luck. Edmonds got a 2 on his bp hr, not that it was needed on a 1-17 chance. Padres used a 2b-1b-2b-squeeze to take a 2-1 lead in the 3rd but Walker hit a 2 run homer to put Colorado right back in front. Joyner homered leading off the 4th but Baerga homered in the bottom of the inning. Gwynn homered in the 8th to tie the game and Flaherty doubled in a run in the 9th to give SD the 5-4 win. Hoffman allowed a walk in getting his first save of the year. game 2: A 9th inning field goal propelled the Padres to a 15-12 win in a game that saw both teams get a bp grand slam. This one was actually just 1-0 after 3 1/2 innings. In the bottom of the fourth, an x play single and back to back walks on the same 6-7 roll loaded the bases for Jeff Reed. His pop fly (split of 15) just cleared the fence for a grand slam. Padres came right back with an even bigger inning. Caminiti had a 3 run homer and Chris Jones a 2 run double to make it a 6-4 game. 2 doubles and 3 singles put Colorado up 7-6 as the teams played I don't want the lead, you take the lead. A pair of doubles got the Rockies another run in the 6th. In the 7th, the Padres got a run on 2 doubles before a couple of walks (1 intentional) loaded the bases. Caminiti made them pay as he got a bp grand slam and an 11-8 lead. Bruske made his debut and pulled the perfect Sambito, allowing a homer to the first batter he faced. After striking out Reed, he allowed another homer to make it 11-10. Veras had an rbi double in the 8th. In the 9th, Joyner had a 2 run homer and Discarcina drew a bases loaded walk (one of 4 in the inning) to make it 15-10. This being the Padres, we had to give up yet another homer in the 9th to make it 15-12. The Padres outhit the Rockies 20-17 and managed to pull a rare double double as they also left 15 men on base in this game. Can't imagine too many times a team has scored and left 15 men on in the same game. game 3: Caminiti continued his tear with a 2 run homer in the first but that lead didn't even last an inning. 2 walks, 2 singles, a double and a sac fly brought in 3 runs for the Rockies. Padres got an unearned run in the 2nd on Castillo's error. Castillo made up for that with an rbi single in the 3rd to put the Rockies back on top. 3 singles followed by 3 walks got the Padres 3 runs in the 6th but the Rockies responded with 3 singles and a double to tie the game up at 6 after 6. Lieberthal had an rbi double in the 8 and that proved to be the winning run. Hoffman faced 2 batters in the 9th and got a double play and strikeout for his second save. |
