Subject: Reds @ Braves
Although our next break in a home game will be the first of the season at Riverfront, the Reds seem to be starting to end the long nightmare on the road. Our mission was aided this week by that rarest of things -- a team underachieving worse than the Reds.... Game 1: The Reds spent most of this game in the library trying to look up the record for most LOB in a 9 inning contest since we were about to break whatever it is; alas, that achievement will have to wait for another day since the N.L. record is 18 and we merely accumulated 16. The Reds LOBbed 8 (one short of the max) in the first 3 frames but did plate one runner and John Smiley made that one hold up until a clutch hit by the Braves tied it up at 1-1 in the 5th. Reggie Sanders got the lead back with a solo homer in the 6th, but it was the 4 runs we added in the 7th which provided the margin in the 7-3 victory. ATN starter Tom Glavine entered this game with a 1.96 ERA -- and a 1-4 record. Today he received more support than usual at the plate and in the field, but Glavine permitted *17* baserunners in 6.1 IP and only Cincy ineptitude prevented the score from being considerably more lopsided. Pokey Reese led all players with 4 hits and raised his 1997 average to .200 while #1 draftee Chris Holt was every bit as luckless in relief as he is as a starter, creating a save situation for Scott Sullivan. The ace arsonist didn't blow it and once again wrestled his ERA temporarily back under the 7.0 mark despite a card which should result in an ERA about a third as high. ====================================================================================== Game 2: John Smoltz was treated as rudely as Glavine had been (4.1 IP, 8 hits, 7 runs) and both teams emptied their benches in a see-saw struggle in which the Reds came out 8-7 winners after blowing leads of 3-0 and 7-6. Tyler Green was staked to that 3-0 advantage during the initial half inning but coughed up a first-batter gopher and the Braves pulled out to a 6-3 lead after 4 frames, helped out by the always reliable Eddie Taubensee's defensive follies (2 unearned runs of sabotage). Green opened the CIN 5th with a single off of Smoltz and the 3 hits which followed vanquished the defending Cy Young hurler and brought on the first of 6 ATN relievers. Between that and numerous pinch hitters and defensive replacements, the teams combined to use 38 players in this non-extra inning affair. Aided by another critical Taubensee passed ball, the Braves knotted the count at 7-7 in the 6th when the runner who was helpfully moved into scoring position crossed the plate on Mark Lemke's clutch double. Taubensee wound up scoring the winning run however, when he got the first of 3 straight singles in the CIN 8th. Cincy pitchers not only gave up 12 hits (same as the ATN pitchers) but also issued 7 free passes that the Braves mainly stranded (11 LOB altogether). Felix Rodriguez earned his first major league win for the visitors, and Sullivan notched save #6. ====================================================================================== Game 3: All good things must come to an end, and Cincy's mini winning streak was terminated on a day where the Atlanta offense was held to 4 hits and 1 run, with nearly all of the credit for that going to scrap heap scrub Mike Mohler (7 IP, 3 hits, 1 run, 1 loss). Mike Remlinger had the best day of his life for the Braves, scattering 2 hits in 6 innings while walking just 2 and fanning 11 hapless Reds. Obviously he allowed zilch in the run column, and the same could be said for the 3 relievers who followed. Final score: 1-0, with the lone run coming via a surgical split card single off the bat of Darrin Jackson in the 2nd, a sac bunt, and a clutch single from Jose Offerman. As usual, the team with the least offensive talent in the majors couldn't generate much heat by itself, and we benefitted from 8 blown x's by the Atlanta D in the first 2 contests, but they went 5 for 6 for Remlinger and company in the finale after tightening up with a timely pair of x-DPs near the end of game 2.
