Pedro Martinez retired 10 batters on strikeouts as the Montreal Expos won in dramatic fashion over the New York NL Mets by a score of 5 to 4 at Shea Stadium.
Montreal scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning plating 3 runs utilizing 2 base hits. After two were out Brad Fullmer began the rally when he stroked a single. Dave Hollins came next and he drew a walk. John Franco then let loose a wild pitch. Vladimir Guerrero was up next and he rifled a three-run blast. Neither team was able to score until the 6th inning.
Shayne Bennett(2-1) went 1/3 of an inning allowing 1 run for the victory. Ugueth Urbina got the save, his 5th. Franco(0-2) was charged with the loss in relief.
'I pin this one on my own shoulders,' Franco said. 'The bottom line is I didn't get the job done. Our fans deserve better than this.'
