Subject: Reds @ Mets
The Reds visit the Big Apple and shock the first-place Mets, coming one typical screw job away from a sweep.... Game 1: Like pretty much every Cincy player, John Smiley hasn't caught many breaks this season but he certainly hasn't been awful either: a pitcher with just 5 walks and 36 strikeouts in 30 IP is doing *something* right. Coming off what was his only really bad start of the year last week in Florida, Smiley rebounded by permitting 7 baserunners in 6 IP and continuing his strikeout parade with 10. And for a rare change he got some support from his teammates in this see-saw contest, with the Mets coming back every time the Reds put runs on the board but they fell a trifle short at the end. Final score: 7-5. Cincy had leads of 4-1 and 7-3 and the bullpen put on its usual clinic of how not to seal up a win, but after Hector Carrasco's feeble effort got the Mets within 2 runs Scott Sullivan earned his 14th save (not bad for a team with only 24 wins). Willie Greene homered for the Reds while Cincy pitchers were victimized by a trio of gophers but fortunately little else. ========================================================================================= Game 2: The throwaway game, with the Reds LOBbing 9 and hitting into 2 timely rally-killing DPs while our opponent batted .600 with RISP and stranded just 4. That was hardly all of the bad breaks the Reds endured; how about not one but two $ chokes at the plate in clutch situations which cost a minimum of 3 runs? Then there was the final "rally" by the Mets in the 8th which broke a 3-3 tie just after our second $ choke ended the top of that frame with (of course) the bases loaded. New York had 4 singles in their attack, half of them coming when HAL found, not once but twice, our lone '4' in the field at 3B and used that range rating (as opposed to the good e-rating) both times. Add it all up and you get yet another undeserved loss, this one by the count of 5-3. No save today for Sullivan, just loss #5 as he was the victim of HAL's surgical defensive sabotage. ========================================================================================= Game 3: Paul Byrd, the unluckiest pitcher on the unluckiest staff on the unluckiest team in the universe, came up with the shocker of the year and not only notched his very first win after 6 ugly losses, but tossed a 4-hit shutout in the process and his teammates had an unnecessarily effective day at the plate. Final score: 10-0. All 9 CIN players got hits, 7 of them (including Byrd) collecting 2 or more. NYN starter Al Leiter combined with a pair of relievers to fan 11 Reds, but neither that nor our 10 LOB made much of a dent in the 18-hit onslaught that consisted of 15 singles, 1 double, and home runs by Tony Phillips and Reggie Sanders. The 4 NYN hits were singles (no homers off Byrd for a VERY rare change -- he came in with 14 gopher bites in barely 50 IP), and he fanned 5 while issuing 3 free passes. Alan |
