Subject: Reds @ Padres

For the second week in a row the Reds visit a team which is at or near the top of its division, but which in reality is not significantly better than the lowly Reds in terms of talent.  The Reds -- in road games only -- have lately been competitive though mostly luckless; this series was nearly the same.  We were competitive but unfortunately reverted to home-game form by being totally luckless....

Game 1: John Smiley's strikeout express came to an abrupt end (5 IP, 0 K) but he hardly pitched badly, permitting just 2 runs which both scored via solo gopher bites.  The Reds could only muster one home run, also solo, and that was exactly the difference.  Final score: 3-2.  Cincy's clutchless wonders took a typical 0-fer with RISP, but for a change so did our opponent.  The Reds kept the game close -- and kept San Diego's LOB count to a bare minimum -- by picking 3 runners off first base in the contest.

Smiley was assigned the loss but, as so often is the case, the actual losing run was choked up by the Cincy Arson Squad.  This came in the bottom of the 8th and therefore negated Mark Smith's homer for the Reds which came in the top of the 9th.

====================================================================================

Game 2: Another day, another massive choke, another close loss for the Reds who had a 5-0 lead as the Southern California crowd took its 7th inning stretch.

Pretty much every dice roll is bad news for the Reds but "snake eyes" was particularly so today, and it began with the very first batter after the fans resumed their places.  Greg Vaughn (keep that name in mind) rolled a 1-2 and found a lucky HBP; he and another baserunner quickly came around to score on Darin Erstad's 3-run gopher.

Moments after the Reds (16 LOB today) LOBbed 'em loaded without scoring in the 8th, Vaughn singled home Ken Caminiti to pull the home team within 1.  After a couple more Cincy LOB in the 9th, that '1' the Padres needed was dutifully supplied and we proceeded to overtime.  A sac fly in the 12th put the Reds up 6-5 but Vaughn again, leading off, rolled another lucky pair of snake eyes and this time found a split card gopher chance; naturally he didn't miss.

After the Reds LOBbed runner #16 in the 13th, leaving a runner 90 feet from home, a swift pair of hits in the bottom of the lucky 13th gave the fortunate home team the win while the unluckiest team in the universe chalked up one more monster choke for the record books.  Final score: 7-6 in 13.

Massive underachiever Pokey Reese had the best day of his career so far for the Reds, raising his average all the way to .152 while collecting 2 hits -- his first 2 major league home runs -- and driving in 3 runs.

Game 3: The Reds still kept it close though not playing particularly well, close enough that the 3 errors we choked up and our 2 runners who were gunned at the plate (in contrast to the play at the plate which HAL turned into a convenient error on a CIN OF) made a world of difference in a 6-4 loss.

Starter Chris Holt (good card, zero luck) had another typical outing, being battered for 11 hits -- 7 on fortuitous split cards including 2 critical gophers -- in 7 innings of futile effort.

The Cincy offense was largely inert against mediocre lefty Sterling Hitchcock before exploding for 5 baserunners and 3 runs in the 9th inning against a pair of Padre relievers.  The Reds ended the game with 2 LOB, which would have been 3 had our second runner of the game not been forfeited at the plate.

Patrick Lennon's timely throwing error hurt the Reds, but he did collect 3 hits and drive in 3 of the 4 CIN runs.

Alan
