Subject: Reds @ Dodgers
The Reds return to our requisite pattern of 2 losses in every 3 games. Despite a deservedly low-rated offense which features little in the way of baserunners, in contrast to a massively underachieving pitching staff that gives our fortunate opponents opportunities galore, the Amazing Reds still have managed to out-LOB the other side during 1997 and this series was no exception (26-12). Part of our expertise in that area is due to stats like the 3 for 24 we managed with RISP in these 3 games, as the beat goes eternally on.... Game 1: Reds LOB 10 and go 0 for 7 with RISP while the Dodgers get 3 early runs and nothing more. Sadly, "nothing more" is superior to "nothing at all" and the visitors give L.A. starter Chan Ho a walk in the Park. Final score: 3-0, with John Smiley taking the tough loss. Total bases in the contest were identical (9-8) and so were the baserunners (11-10) but.... something about clutch chokes goes here. Game 2: Another 11-LOB performance but we loaded up with RHB against hard lefty Chuck Finley and scored 5 more runs than we did yesterday. CIN starter Mike Mohler had another good start and, here in mid-June, could celebrate win #1 at last. Final score: 5-2. Mohler permitted 1 run in 7 IP and Kent Mercker, not normally a reliever, nonetheless fit right in by permitting a 9th inning gopher. Game 3: An outcome quite reminiscent of game 1, with the Dodgers benefitting from an attack of surgical split cards in the early innings (and Luckless Chris Holt unsurprisingly getting screwed by them), building a 2-0 lead and getting nothing more, which once again came out on top of "nothing at all". Cincy batters rolled in empty columns all day when not finding the lone out in loaded columns, and were limited to 3 hits as compared to the magnificent bounty L.A. batters got (4 hits). The teams combined for 0 hits with RISP, but with a sac fly and a solo gopher as their entire offense the Dodgers could prevail even though they took a "Cincinnati" in that department today. Alan |
