Subject: Reds @ Cubs
Though still the worst team in creation when it comes to games played at home, the Reds jeopardized our status as the worst team anywhere (home or road) by taking 3 of 4 in the Friendly Confines.... Game 1: HAL immediately demonstrated via the split cards how the Reds were going to fare today (20-20-19-18-17) though as you can see we did improve considerably as the contest progressed. What with being screwed on every split chance, the visitors unsurprisingly found themselves down 3-0 quickly with Luckless Chris Holt on the mound. But both the Cincy pitching and hitting also improved as the contest progressed, with the Chicago scoring limited to that lone frame, while the Reds tied it up against Darryl Kile in the 5th then bombarded reliever Terry Adams for 5 in the 8th to prevail by the score of 8-3. Luckless C.H. naturally didn't get the W but free agent reliever John Johnstone pitched 3 scoreless relief innings and kept his ERA at 0.00. The offense never did figure out the split cards, getting the adverse result on all 6 chances, but we found a sufficient number of baserunners even without them and went an astonishing 6 for 9 with RISP (!). ========================================================================================= Game 2: The offense never did figure out the split cards, getting the adverse result on 8 of 9 chances, but we found a good (though not quite sufficient) number of baserunners even without them -- so as to LOB 10 -- and went a typical 2 for 13 with RISP and lost by the score of 7-4. The high numbers on the splits mysteriously vanished when they would have been most desirable, such as when the Cubs were stealing bases (6 for 7). What little magic John Smiley possessed earlier this season has worn off, and he was abused for 10 hits in less than 4 IP. Chicago managed just 1 hit after Smiley left the premises, but the Cincy offense was equally inert between the first and last innings. CIN reliever Tyler Green walked 4 but permitted just that 1 hit and no runs in 4.1 innings. ========================================================================================= Game 3: Although the Reds compiled just a wee edge in total bases (24 to 4) today, the game remained as close as it could possibly be with the score tied 2-2 after 6 innings. Finally the bats exploded for 6 runs in the 7th and Cincinnati went on to a 9-2 win. Tony Phillips broke the deadlock with an RBI double, Willie Greene delivered a bases-loaded single instead of the usual strikeout in that situation (not just Greene, any Red) and Reggie Sanders completed the rally and his 4-hit day with a home run. Dave Burba (6 IP, 1 ER) actually hung around long enough the get the win and Johnstone did it again, earning his first save with 3 letter-perfect innings of relief. In 5 outings, Johnstone (1-0, 1 save) has now pitched 10.1 innings and allowed 0 runs. ========================================================================================= Game 4: Even though that perfection of Johnstone's came to a halt today (4 IP, 1 run, 1 blown save) and the Reds kept the LOB counter humming along (14), we rebounded from all that choking to earn a 9-7 win in 11 innings. CIN starter Paul Byrd was pitching effectively enough until HAL realized he was on the mound, then the Reds bounced back after giving the Cubs 4 runs in the 6th to score 3 of our own in the 7th and retake a 7-6 lead. But the overworked (and why not?) Johnstone fatigued just a little in the CHN 8th and gave up a leadoff double which came around to score on a groundout & sac fly. In the 11th, Doug Henry gave the Reds 3 singles and 2 of them scored to provide the winning margin. Cincy closer Scott Sullivan ended the contest with a shaky inning, lowering his ERA to 5.01 and notching save #17. Three Chicago errors helped our cause greatly -- 4 unearned runs -- though we did our utmost to LOB away that advantage otherwise. Alan |
