Subject: BAA @ TEA Week 15 (plus Week 16 CM)

Eight different Orioles homered as the visitors outscored the Rangers by 21 runs, but questionable managerial decisions cost them a win (and could have cost them another.)

Game 1: TEA 7, BAA 6

The Orioles took a 4-0 lead in the 2nd thanks to two-run homers from two unlikely sources, Todd Greene and Mike Bordick (with a combined 4 previous HRs this season.)   Texas got one back in the bottom of the inning when Will Clark doubled and eventually scored on a sac fly by Fernando Tatis.  In the 5th, the Rangers loaded the bases with no outs and scored two runs on a Ruben Amaro sac fly and a Mark Lewis single to make it a one-run game.  In the 6th, after a Tatis single tied the game, the Orioles manager left Cy Young contender Mike Mussina stay in the game just long enough to serve up a three-run gopher ball to Darren Daulton.  After a Lewis error, Cal Ripken hit yet another 2-run homer in the 8th, but the O's left the tying run stranded on base in the 9th.

Game 2: BAA 18, TEA 0

Before the game's first out, an error and two walks set up a bases-clearing double by Geronimo Berroa, who later scored on a groundout to give Baltimore another early 4-0 lead.  The O's added two more runs in the 3rd on an RBI single by Jeffrey Hammonds and a groundout by Ripken.  Three, count 'em three, Rangers errors helped the O's score four times in the 5th.  A Palmeiro double and two RBI groundouts in the 6th pushed the lead to 13-0, and Berroa tacked on a two-run jack in the 7th.  Three more runs came across in the 8th, with Brady Anderson's RBI triple as the highlight.  Scott Erickson got the complete game shutout victory.  The Rangers had almost as many errors (5) as hits (6), and their offensive woes were exemplified by the first of those hits -- after Daulton singled, a failed hit-and-run attempt got him caught stealing on just a 20% chance of success.

Berroa finished a triple shy of the cycle, with a boxscore line of 6 5 4 6.

Game 3: BAA 10, TEA 6

A solo HR by Berroa and an RBI single by Greene gave the Orioles two 1st inning runs.  Texas' Benji Gil hit a rare solo shot in the bottom of the frame, but Hammonds matched him in the 2nd to make it 3-1.  Rusty Greer homered in the 4th to make it a one-run game again, and Clark tied it in the 6th with another solo HR.  Still in the 6th, with two on and one out, it was deja vu all over again when Daulton came to the plate.  The Orioles manager showed he'd learned his lesson from Game 1 by bringing in lefty reliever Jesse Orosco to face Daulton -- great idea, except that Daulton came through with a three-run homer anyway.  But in the top of the 7th,a similar scenario played out in reverse, as Craig Biggio greeted Rangers reliever Danny Darwin with his own three-run blast to tie the game again.  Two batters later, yet another long fly from Palmeiro put Baltimore back on top 8-6.  In the 8th, pinch-hitter Roberto Alomar joined the homer parade for two more Orioles runs, which loomed large when the Rangers got two runners on in the 9th.  Closer Randy Myers only had to face one batter as the Orioles turned a game-ending double play.
