Whitey Ford(2-1) and Dean Chance(0-3) locked horns in a pitcher's duel with
Ford and the New York AL Yankees coming out on top of the Washington Senators
3 to 1.

Washington surrendered all of the runs New York AL needed in the 8th inning
scoring 3 runs on 4 hits.  Pete Runnels started the inning off right when he
drew a walk.  Hector Lopez stepped into the batter's box and he stroked a
base-hit.  Tony Kubek then delivered a single which scored a run.  Tom Tresh
followed and he doubled scoring another run.  Yogi Berra stepped into the box
and would hit into a fielders choice scoring the final run of the inning.
New York AL had 9 hits for the night.

Hal Reniff got the save, his 1st.

Yankees beat the Washington Senators by the count of 6 to 2.

New York AL delivered all the runs required in the 8th inning as they scored 6

silenced the crowd when he lofted a three-run bomb (his 4th of the season).
Overall New York AL out-hit Washington 9 to 4.

The win went to Bouton(2-0) who allowed 2 runs in 7 innings. Steve Ridzik(0-1)

Al Downing took a no-hitter into the 6th inning as the New York AL Yankees
outscored the Washington Senators 6 to 1.

Downing(1-1) was virtually untouchable.  He didn't give up much, just 4 hits
and 2 walks in 9 innings.  Downing whiffed an impressive total of 12
Washington batters seeing his ERA drop from 3.86 to 2.25.  The left-handed
Downing lost his chance for a no-hitter when Al Weis singled with nobody out
in the 6th inning.  New York AL had 9 hits for the afternoon.

Bennie Daniels(0-1) was the loser.  He was touched for 7 hits and 2 walks in 4
and 2/3 innings.  'Downing took our guys to school' Washington's manager
said. 'Too bad he doesn't pitch for us - it would make my job a whole lot
easier!'
