Reds take the first two games then wind up settling nothing in the 3-way Battle for the Basement in the N.L. Central....

Game 1: The Reds started to choke away an early 5-0 lead, thought better of it and wound up with an 8-4 win.  The two starters entered this contest with records of 4-10 and 2-12; Luckless Chris Holt went the distance and is already up to 5 wins in just 18 weeks, while Pittsburgh's Scott Sanders was pulled after 3 innings and 5 runs (2 earned).  Sanders & 3 relievers combined for 14 K's of CIN batters, nearly all of them with RISP and less than 2 outs in accordance with our longstanding (11 LOB) team policy.

Game 2: No team scored more than once in any inning as the Reds pulled out a 4-3 win with the teams exchanging 4 solo homers for the day.  Another double-digit LOB tally almost finished Tyler Green, but he had a solid outing and outpitched PIN starter Francisco Cordova.  Sanders & Taubensee homered for the visitors, Kendall (just his 2nd) & Martin for the Buccos.  Scott Sullivan earned save #22 and had one of his best outings, retiring all 6 batters he faced and momentarily lowering his ERA to a microscopic (for him) 4.88.

Game 3: The last thing a team wants when doing nothing but playing Usage Ball is a 15 inning game, and the VERY last thing they want is to choke it away.  Cincy took a lead in the 14th, blew that and then completed the job in the 15th as Sullivan's one day of competence was proven to be a fluke (he has a nice 3-10 record now).  Final score: 6-5.  The Reds (14 LOB) may have set some sort of record by failing in 21 times at bat with RISP.

Game 4: All the breaks went one way (you know which way) for 8 innings and that was sufficient for the Reds to compile a 9-0 deficit.  It was only 4-0 through 7 frames but Paul Byrd (1 batter faced, 1 gopher allowed) and Hector Carrasco (1 IP, 4 runs) choked up a 5-run 8th.  So naturally the Reds scored 4 in the 9th and had the tying run in the on-deck circle when Willie Greene made the final out with the bases loaded.  The dice were particularly friendly to PIN starter Esteban Loaiza for the first 8 frames, and the only run charged to him crossed the plate in the 9th after he had left the game.

Alan
