Subject: Reds @ Pirates
The battle for the N.L. Central basement and the #1 lottery seed is decided in convincing (though not quite unanimous) fashion, as the Reds attain the worst record in the majors for the moment. Of course that #1 seeding isn't going to matter much to a team with as rotten luck as the Reds once those lottery dice start rolling. In the 3 games they won in this series the Pirate batters caught all possible (and many impossible) breaks, banging out 50 hits and going an astounding 23 for 50 (.460) with RISP as the hits just kept on comin'.... Game 1: The only Cincy player who wasn't swarmed under by the flood of incredible rolls & splits in favor of our opponent was reliever Pete Harnisch, who not only pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief but also provided 50% of our RBIs by singling home a pair of runs in the lone inning in which we were permitted to score. Final score: 8-4, with Harnisch's heroics coming too late, after Dave Burba was used for 5 innings of batting practice. Game 2: The Reds touched PIN starter Mark Leiter for 2 in the first, but Leiter got a brief respite from his brutal season when HAL turned his full wrath against the Reds again, particularly the defense (4 errors and about 8 other blown x's) and that 2-0 lead wound up as a 14-5 loss. Chris Hammond had his worst start yet thanks to all the sabotage, Buddy Groom faced 4 batters (0 retired, 4 runs) and the rout was on though it waited until the 4th inning to get underway. Game 3: The Reds scored in 7 of the 9 frames but still barely held on for a 9-5 win. Steve Avery was every bit as abused as all other Cincy starters in this series but today the boot momentarily came off the throat of the CIN offense. Newcomer Alex Diaz got a start and went 2 for 3 and scored 3 runs and 7 of the 8 starters in the field got at least 1 hit. Game 4: We scored only in the 1st & 9th innings, amassing a total of 5 runs yet paling in comparison to the 20-hit attack that was launched against John Smiley and 2 helpless relievers in between. The surgical carnage against the Cincy pitching staff, today as in the entire series, had to be seen to be fully appreciated. PIN starter Jose Silva, with one of the worst cards around, cruised easily to his first major league win against the utterly luckless Reds after some initial jitters. Alan |
