The Jekyll/Hyde home/road season continues as the Padres come a Hoffman blown save away from a sweep. game 1: Kent doubled in the second and then came around on a wild pitch and sac fly to give the Giants the early lead. Lee tripled and scored on a Cianfrocca single to tie it in the 4th but SF got that right back when Snow walked with 2 outs, stole second and scored on a Hill single. Lieberthal led off the 5th with a homer (getting 17 on his 1-17 chance) to tie it once again. VanderWal had a pinch hit rbi single in the 6th to put SD on top. Neither team really threatened the rest of the way and SD held on for the 3-2 win. game 2: Padres opened a big lead, watched SF claw back in it and then pulled away late for the 8-4 win. Lieberthal had a 2 run single in the 4th, Vaughn drew a bases loaded walk in the 5th and Gomez and Gwynn had rbi singles in the 6th as SD went up 5-0. Seitzer had a 2 out 2 unearned run double in the 6th to get SF on the board. Bonds added a 2 out 2 run homer in the 7th. Caminiti had a 2 run double in the 8th and Gomez had a sac fly where the 1-19 runner barely beat the tag at the plate. Gwynn followed with a single and Gomez was thrown out on yet another 19 split. game 3: Giants scored their lone run in the first thanks to Kent reaching on a 1b1 chance. Erstad returned the favor when he got a 3 on his 1-4 hr chance in the 3rd inning. After loading the bases with 0 outs in the 7th, the 3rd straight Padres runner drew a 19 on the throw to the plate and it looked like SF might be out of trouble. Finley and Veras followed with rbi singles and SD won 3-1. game 4: Giants got 1 run in the first and second off of Heath Murray but he settled down and managed to go 5 innings with no further damage. Gwynn had an rbi single in the 6th. SD opened the 7th with 4 straight singles to take a 3-2 lead. Hoffman came on with 2 on and 2 out in the 8th to get out of the jam. In the 9th, he wasn't so lucky. With about 3 chances to get on base on his card, Seitzer led off the inning with a 4-5 but settled for a single since he is W hitter. A grounder moved him up a base and Kelly singled him home to tie the game. Next batter again rolled the 4-5 but somehow missed the homer this time and we went into extras where the Giants threatened just about every inning. In the 10th the got a leadoff single and walk but a double play killed that rally. In the 11th. Sanders led off with a double but was thrown out at the plate with no one out. In the 12th, the Giants again got 2b-1b to lead off the inning. A couple grounders and a fly out kept the game going. In the 13th, Finley had a 2 out shot at a 2 run homer. With a 1-12 chance, he drew lucky 13 to end the inning. In the bottom of the inning, the Giants yet again led off with the 2b-1b combo. The Padres luck ran out as Hill followed with an rbi single to give SF the 4-3 win. Out of the 8 starters in this series, none made it out of the 6 inning and only 3 went 6 full innings so the bullpens were used heavily on both sides. |
