Subject: Reds @ Cardinals

Although the Reds clearly stand alone at the bottom of the 1997 talent rankings (worse than the A's, Cubs & Pirates and much worse than the White Sox and Blue Jays & everyone else) and therefore deserve the best chance at the #1 pick in the 1998 draft, sadly it will not happen that way thanks to several factors:

- a late-season hot streak in which the Reds played .500 ball over the final 26 games, and other things which would almost never be permitted if the Reds were trying to contend, such as:

- competent performance in close games (21-21 in 1-run decisions in 1997), and

- picking this season to actually overachieve our talent level.

In this season-ending road series vs. St. Louis, there were other rarities such as getting split card results that would normally be unheard of, back-to-back-to-back home runs -- in our favor -- a player going 5 for 5, 4 innings of scoreless bullpen work to save a game, etc....

=======================================================================================

Game 1: Now THIS was what a Cincy game has been for most, but not quite enough, of the 1997 season: 0 for 6 with RISP and 3 costly unearned runs which were the precise difference in the outcome as the Reds lose by the score of 5-2.  Getting maximum mileage from the defensive sabotage, 3 consecutive x-plays in the SLN 2nd (the ball never leaving the infield) resulted in errors and the damage was done.  When the Reds cut the margin to 3-2, the bullpen came to the rescue with 2 arsonists teaming up for 2 late runs to seal the defeat.  Dave Burba made his final appearance for the Reds and allowed 0 earned runs in 6 IP; all that got him was loss #11 of the season.

Game 2: The Reds outhit the Cards 15-6 but the final tally of total bases was close since St. Louis managed to take extra bases on 5 of their 6 safeties (CIN: 12 singles, 3 doubles) including a pair of gopher bites suffered by Cincy starter Chris Holt.  Those 2 bites were good for 3 runs, but Holt allowed nothing else and 4 arsonists were completely out of gasoline, permitting 1 hit and 0 runs over the final four frames in the Reds' 8-3 rout of Jose Lima and others.  Ex-Card Dmitri Young savaged his old mates with a 5 for 5 day, collecting 2 doubles and 4 RBI, all 4 coming with 2 outs in an inning.

Game 3: The Reds used 10 pitchers, 80% of whom pitched well, and built a 5-0 lead on the way to an unearned 5-2 victory and a disastrous series win.  The contest was decided in the Cincy 3rd when a DeShields error opened the inning and a trio of homers followed after what should have been the third out.  Young, Merced & Greene did the consecutive honors, with Young getting the party started with a HR 1, fb(B) 2-20 on which he got the 1 as so often happens in Cincy games -- by our opponents.  SLN starter Manny Aybar suffered a relentless beating to the tune of 13 baserunners and 22 total bases in 6.2 IP, yet he allowed just a solitary earned run.
