Subject: Mariners/Orioles ALDS games 3, 4, and 5
Game 3: Scott Erickson (14-15, 4.50) vs. Jamie Moyer (12-5, 4.63)
The Orioles scored early in game three, ripping three quick singles to grab a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Seattle roared back in the bottom of the inning, plating three runs (three-run homer by Ken Griffey Jr.) before making an out.
The Mariners never looked back. They chased Erickson in the third (2 1/3, 5 ER, 2 HR) and racked up 15 total hits and four home runs. Final: Seattle 16, Baltimore 1.
Game 4: Curt Schilling (20-11, 2.84) vs. Randy Johnson (21-7, 3.04)
In a rematch of game one's high-octane starting pitchers, the early results indicated a pitchers dues as Johnson and Schilling traded zeroes through three. The Orioles struck first, with back-to-back long balls: a two-run blast by Jeffrey Hammonds, followed by Matt Williams' solo shot.
Seattle tied the game bottom five, with a three-run homer from Alex Rodriguez. Two batters later, Griffey added a solo shot to make it 4-3.
Johnson took the mound with the narrowest of leads in the seventh, and surrendered singles to BJ Surhoff and Cal Ripken Jr. Todd Greene's double tied the game and sent Johnson to the showers. Craig Biggio then squeezed Ripken home to take a 5-4 lead.
By the ninth, Greene's solo homer was mere insurance. Randy Myers put it on ice for the Orioles, tying the series and forcing a deciding fifth game.
Game 5: Mike Mussina (15-10, 3.46) vs. Jeff Fassero (20-4, 3.71)
Five of the top eight Cy Young Award votegetters have pitched in this series, and this rematch of game two starters featured the 3rd- and 7th-place finishers. Could this series loaded with big hitters end with a pitchers' duel? Based on the jacktastic context of late-90s SMILEY, absolutely.
The Mariners struck first, taking an early 2-0 lead on an Aaron Ledesma RBI single and a run-scoring groundout by Joey Cora. But Mussina buckled down, and subsequently locked down the Mariners offense. Matt Williams' two-run dinger in the fourth tied it, and the bats went silent.
Tied at two in the bottom of the eighth, A-Rod stretched a double on Ricky Otero's middling arm. Eric Davis drove in A-Rod with a single, giving Seattle a 3-2 lead and finally chasing Mussina. Jesse Orosco came in to face Griffey, who flied to right, Davis to third.
Baltimore called on Armando Benitez, and Edgar Martinez grounded back to the box. Davis broke for the plate, and narrowly scored. 4-2 Mariners.
Top 9, Todd Greene continued his remarkable series with a one-out single, his sixth hit in eleven ABs. Mike Timlin needed two outs to advance the M's. He promptly coughed up a pinch-hit single to Lenny Webster, but got Geronimo Berroa to ground out 6-3. Dan Plesac came in with a rare opportunity to save for the M's, and coaxed a pop-up by Palmeiro to end it. Final: Mariners 4, Orioles 2. |
