Subject: NLDS SD @ Florida
The Marlins overcame a 2-0 deficit, by winning 3 straight at home to advance to the NLCS.
In game 3, the score was 2-0 in favor of the Marlins heading to the 9th (Appier 6 1 0 0 1 5), but SD tied it via an untimely error by SS Edgar Renteria (1e19) which would have been the 2nd out in the inning. San Diego scored again in the 10th on Mike Lieberthal's 2-out HR to take a short-lived 3-2 lead. However, Trevor Hoffman was not summoned until 1 on, 1 out in the bottom of the 10th, and he immediately allowed back-to-back hits by Renteria and Devon White to send the home fans home happy, 4-3. SD 3 6 2 FLA 4 8 1
Game 4 featured no extra base hits as Scott Kamieniecki and Mike Hampton were matched up. Hampton allowed a run in the 4th on a Steve Finley sac fly, but Florida returned the favor in a big way in the bottom of the frame- scoring 4 times on a bases-loaded walk to Jeff Conine, a 2-run single by Charles Johnson, and an RBI double by Hampton as Johnson was held at third base. Those 4 runs proved to be enough as SD only scored once more in the 8th on Ken Caminit's 2-out single. SD 2 8 0 FLA 4 5 1
In the finale, the killer B's (Kevin Brown and Bobby Bonilla) were the difference for the Marlins. Brown went the distance (9 7 2 1 3 3) on the hill and was aided by Bobby Bo's 2 home runs, 3 runs scored, and 3 RBI. Jay Bell and PH Archi Cianfrocco knocked home the two runs for the Padres. SD 2 7 0 FLA 5 10 2
The difference in the series was that the Marlins' starting pitchers stepped up in the 3 games at home- combining for 22.2 IP, allowing 14 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 HR and 7 BB while recording 13 K. Tony Gwynn led the Padres with a .450 average in the NLDS, but the rest of the San Diego team hit .223 (33-for-148).
