Subject: Opening Day report from Wrigley Field

The CIN roster appears to be better than it was in 1997 but that's just an illusion (we'll be in the lottery again -- and get screwed there again -- for sure), while the Cubs actually are much improved from where they were last season and may be able to compete for a playoff spot.

Today however the Reds played nearly a flawless game and in the end still did very well, choking away only 1 (unearned) run of a 2-run lead in the bottom of the ninth.

Newcomer Doug Glanville opened the 1998 season for the Reds by naturally failing on a split card chance at a home run -- but not really "failing" since he has W power so the double, which he stretched into a triple, was actually the best possible outcome!  A groundout plated him to give the visitors a 1-0 lead after half an inning and Steve Avery took the mound for the Reds.

Naturally he was a failure too right off the bat, walking Tom Goodwin on 6 pitches.

But speaking of flawless, Avery then retired the next **21** batters in a row and took a no-hitter into the 8th inning and had faced the minimum up to that point (the next batter hit into a DP after Goodwin's free pass).  In the meantime, the Reds scored a second run in the 7th to take a 2-0 lead.

Sammy Sosa flew out to begin the 8th but Tony Fernandez smacked a clean single and Avery's chance at immortality was gone.  Avery did finish out the inning by getting Mickey Morandini to fly out and then fanned Dave Martinez on the rarely-seen NINE pitch strikeout.

When John Flaherty singled to open the CHN 9th on Avery's 96th pitch of the day, Buddy Groom was summoned from the bullpen to try to salvage the victory.  Which he did, barely.

The Reds of course had been perfect on x-plays throughout the game, but it was now the bottom of the 9th and time for the Reds to do what we do infinitely better than anyone else.  Brant Brown hit a routine grounder to Barry Larkin, a possible DP, but he booted it and all hands were safe.

Jose Hernandez lined another single, too hard for the slow-footed Flaherty to try to score, and the bases were loaded with still nobody out.

Neifi Perez then smoked a grounder to Bret Boone at second base -- and he didn't choke on it!  Boone flipped to Larkin, who successfully completed the DP as Flaherty scored the unearned run which broke the shutout as Brown moved to third.  Groom then retired Mark Grace on an easy tapper back to the mound and the Reds escaped with a 2-1 win, coming just *that* close to turning a potential no-hitter into a loss.

Alan
