Subject: Opening Day at Shea Stadium
The Marlins don't have nearly the pitching staff they've possessed the last 3 years, and it showed in the Big Apple on opening day. However, starting pitcher Livan Hernandez did well enough in his 5 innings, that the Marlins held a 4-3 lead after 7 innings. Raul Mondesi started where he left off in '97 with a 1st inning double and a 3-run homer in the 5th which made the score, 4-2, in favor of the Fish.
Fast forward to the fateful 8th. The six-fingered man, Antonio Alfonseca had done a great job setting up closer Matt Mantei when he retired all 3 batters in the 7th and then recorded his 3rd strikeout by retiring Jose Canseco for the first out in the 8th. With Robin Ventura and David Segui due up, I decided that reverse righty Matt Mantei could close out the 8th and go for the save in the 9th. Wrong answer. With one out, Ventura walked and Segui singled on their own cards. Then catcher Gregg Zaun let one get by for a passed ball and 2 runners in scoring position. Could've walked Alfonzo there, but I didn't like the idea of Mark McLemore batting with the bases loaded. Thankfully, I didn't have to worry about that as Alfonzo got a roll on Mantei's card, and the Mets took a 5-4 lead. Had I learned my lesson, I would have removed Mantei, but I decided I just had to see if he could get 2 outs. After 2 singles from the next 3 hitters, it was obvious that wasn't going to happen. The final score was 6-4 in favor of the Mets.
