Subject: Reds @ Mets

The Reds' luck (and bullpen) are in typically atrocious form, turning what should have been a series sweep into a series loss....

Game 1: CIN starter Dennys Reyes had a performance somewhat worthy of Nolan Ryan in his younger days (5 IP, 2 hits, 8 free passes) and left on the short end of a 2-0 score (1 unearned).  The Reds rallied for 4 runs in the 7th and even mixed in some clutch hits (!) during the first two contests.

Sadly, the Arson Squad had the flame turned up high as ever.  Scott Sullivan gophered one up to the very first batter he faced in the bottom of the 7th and a second gopher one frame later erased the Cincy lead entirely.  Mike Mohler took over at that point and with 2 outs (of course) in the bottom of the 9th (of course) he suffered a gopher bite (of course) and the choke was complete.  Final score: 7-5.  The Reds outhit the Mets and got more clutch hits but could not overcome all the walks, gophers and the inevitably critical unearned run.

========================================================================================

Game 2: Finally getting the idea to avoid the bullpen at all costs, Steve Avery went the distance for the Reds and registered a 12-5 win that wasn't as easy as the score suggests.  Avery permitted only 5 hits but was wild (5 walks) and gopher-prone (2) and although the visitors trashed Rick Reed for an early 7-0 lead the comfortable margin had bled away to just 7-4 heading into the closing frames, well within choking range.

But the least talented offense in the majors equaled the Mets in homers today and even drew more walks, not to mention getting far more hits, and eventually pulled away.  The Reds were 5 for 11 with RISP and delivered 8 RBI after 2 were out in an inning, a wild departure from the norm that won't be seen again anytime soon.

========================================================================================

Game 3: As so often happens against the unluckiest team anywhere, the Mets played just about perfect defense against the Reds -- 13 for 13 on x-plays hit to anyone other than Jose '5' Canseco in right field.  And even Canseco was a perfect 1 for 1 coming into this game, which would be decided by an x-play.

Breaking the spell temporarily, Bret Boone hit one to Jose with one out in the 1st that resulted in a triple.  Barry Larkin (a 2e14 at short who has blown almost as many x-plays as he's made, go figure) then stepped in and performed as required by Cincinnati protocol when a runner is at third with less than 2 outs; he struck out and the Reds never did score.

Until the next frame when Canseco helped again with a triple+error with 2 runners aboard.  That gave the Reds a 3-0 lead and completed our scoring for the day.  A gopher right at the split card limit gave the Mets a run exactly one batter later and they added another run before the inning ended.

Starter Tyler Green held the lead into the 8th, when he issued two surgical free passes, observed a double steal, then allowed a game-tying sac fly as the Mets knotted the count without anything so mundane as an actual hit.  Moments earlier the Reds had a runner at third with less than 2 outs.  If you look closely, you can still see him standing there.

The clutch failures would prove fatal to the Reds as they always do, when with 2 outs (of course) in the bottom of the 10th with 2 runners on base via a pair of free passes, Canseco atoned for his defensive damage by coming through with an RBI single -- on, of course, a blown x-play by the Reds.  Final score: 4-3.
