Padres return the favor in the home and home series by taking 2 at Three Rivers. This series had a little of everything, 2 offensive games and a near no hitter as well as lots of low splits, even when they didn't need to be that low.

game 1: Not much pitching in this one as the teams combined for 19 runs on 29 hits (9 2b's 2 3b's and 5 hr's). Jay Bell homered in the first to give the Padres a quick 1-0 lead. Greg Vaughn is a 3 defense this year but you would never know it in this game. In the 2nd, he played a 2 out flyball into a double that was followed by a clutch single and the Pirates had a 2-1 lead. Gwynn led off the 4th with a homer to tie it. In the 5th, Erstad led off with a single but the next 2 batters struck out. Veras then doubled and Bell walked to load the bases. Gwynn came through with a 2 run single and Vaughn followed with a 2 run triple before Caminiti doubled him home to give the Padres a 5 run lead. David Bell homered in the bottom of the 5th. In the 6th, Erstad led off with a double and the next 2 batters made outs again. 3 straight rbi doubles followed before out 3 was finally made. Finley homered in the 7th. In the bottom of the inning, Vaughn allowed another ball to fall in front of him that keyed a 2 run inning. Padres were held scoreless in the 8th but Pittsburgh got a run when Kendall doubled and scored on a single+throwing error. Vaughn hit a 2 run homer in the 9th to cap the 13-6 game.

game 2: If this series had been played on Sesame Street it would have been easy to pick it out as "this one is not like the other ones". Mark Petkovsek in game 1 had the loaded 3 column and never rolled it in 4 ab's. Andy Ashby is a 1 hitter and rolled the 3 column every time up. That was about the only thing he did wrong though. Through 7 innings this game was scoreless. In fact, Ashby had a no hitter and had faced the minimum (a walk on a 1-12 roll was erased on a caught stealing). Unfortunately for SD, Jon Lieber was just as effective as he allowed 2 out singles in the 1st,3rd and 4th. Padres had first and third with one out in the 6th but Vaughn drew an 11 on his 1-9 bp single. In the 8th, Veras drew a one out walk but was caught stealing. Bell singled and then Erstad got an auto homer off Lieber's card to make it 2-0. Ashby retired the first batter before allowing 3 straight hits that tied the game. Neither team threatened in the 9th. In the 10th, the Pirate defense gave this one away. First batter reached on an x play single. Next batter reached on a Percival error. Kendall then threw away a bunt for a 2 base error to give the Padres the go ahead run. Percival then walked 2 batters to force in a run before Rivera hit a sac fly to make the final 5-2.

game 3: The teams "only" combined for 15 runs on 27 hits in this one. The Pirates slugged 8 doubles among their 13 hits. 4 of the first 5 Padres singled to start the game and it was quickly 2-0. They added a run in the 2nd on a Veras single. In the bottom of the inning the Pirates used 4 doubles and a single to score 4 times. Gwynn doubled and Vaughn followed with a homer to start the 3rd and the Padres were right back on top. Back to back one out doubles in the 4th tied the game. Ward hit a 2 run homer in the 5th to give Pittsburgh the lead for good. In the 7th, 2 singles, a passed ball and a ground out got the Padres back within a run. In the bottom of the inning Yan ran into 2 out trouble for the 2nd straight inning. (in the 6th he gave up 3 walks with 2 outs but escaped without a run). After 2 outs, Pirates got 1b,sb,1b,sb,2b,bb to score a couple of insurance runs as they went on to win 9-6. There were only 2 1-2-3 innings in the entire game (SD 6th and PIN 8th).
