Subject: BAA @ MLA Week 4 (plus Week 5 CM)
The Orioles looked more like last year's Wild Card team than this year's cellar dwellers, averaging 3 times as many runs per game than they did over the first three weeks to sweep Milwaukee.
Game 1: BAA 5, MLA 1
There were encouraging signs of life from Baltimore's bats in the early innings, with solo HRs by Jeff Conine (hitting .122 through Week 3) in the 1st and Craig Biggio (.219) in the 3rd. Devon White's throw from center field nailed Fernando Vina at the plate in the bottom of the 3rd. Brady Anderson (also .122) singled in the 5th and scored on a double by White (an exception at .288), who was singled home by Biggio to give the Orioles a 4-0 lead. The teams traded runs in the 6th --BJ Surhoff (.121) doubled and scored on another Anderson single, but Marquis Grissom hit a sac fly for what proved to be Milwaukee's only run. The margin would have been much wider if the Orioles hadn't had runners thrown out with 90% and 95% chances of success. In their first action of the season, Doug Johns was the winning pitcher and Dave Telgheder recorded a three-inning save.
Game 2: BAA 14, MLA 6
This game also had a 5-1 score... through two innings. The Brewers wasted no time roughing up starter Curt Schilling, as Richie Sexson hit a three-run homer; Scott Rolen added an RBI double and scored on a fielder's choice for a 5-0 1st inning lead. Surhoff singled in a run in the 2nd to put the Orioles on the board. In the 4th, a Conine single and an error by Milwaukee starter Cal Eldred brought in two runs, and Conine came home on a groundout to make it a one-run game. The Brewers rallied in the bottom of the 4th, but great plays by Mike Bordick and Conine limited the damage to one run on a sac fly by Vina. In the 5th, after a wild pitch again put the Orioles within a run, Eldred intentionally walked Conine to load the bases; Bordick (.196) made him pay with a two-run single that put the O's ahead 7-6. A two-run homer by Roberto Alomar (.200) in the 9th gave Baltimore some breathing room -- and after Conine doubled in a run, Surhoff delivered the coup de grace, a grand slam for his first homer of the year. Despite the disastrous first inning, Curt Schilling stuck around long enough to notch the win.
Game 3: BAA 10, MLA 4
This game matched up two starters (Mike Mussina and Bartolo Colon) sporting ERAs roughly double their card stats, and this game didn't help either of them much. Milwaukee took the lead in the 2nd when Rolen tripled and scored on a groundout. In the 3rd, Biggio doubled ahead of a Conine homer, and an error by Colon set up an RBI double by Cal Ripken (.190) for a 3-1 Orioles lead. Turnabout was fair play in the 4th, as a Biggio error was followed by Rolen's game-tying homer. In the 5th, Rafael Palmeiro (.254) went deep for a brief lead, canceled out by an RBI single by Vina. Both starting pitchers exited in the 7th with runners on the corners, but while Baltimore's Jesse Orosco got a strikeout to end the inning, Milwaukee's Bob Wickman wasn't so lucky. Ripken gave the O's the lead (again) with an RBI single, and with the bases loaded, White singled and Geoff Jenkins's throw to home went astray for an 8-4 lead. Biggio's third double of the game drove in White for the fifth run of the inning. The final Orioles run scored in the 8th on a double by defensive replacement Lenny Webster (.200.)
Fun stat: After going hitless in Game 1 to drop to .174, Ripken went 7-for-9 in the next two games, raising his batting average 99 points.
