Subject: BAA @ BOA Week 8 (plus new CM)

After mirror-image scores in the first two games, Baltimore took the rubber match and won a big AL East series in Boston, 2-1.

Game 1: BAA 8, BOA 3

In a spot start, Orioles lefty Doug Johns gave up three singles in the 1st inning to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.  In the 4th, BJ Surhoff hit an RBI double and scored on a sac fly by Jeffrey Hammonds for a one-run Baltimore lead; the inning could have been much bigger, but Craig Biggio committed the cardinal sin of making the first out at home.  Damon Buford answered with a game-tying double in the bottom of the inning.  The O's loaded the bases in the 6th but could only eke out one run on a Mike Bordick single.  Again the Red Sox answered in the same inning, as Mike Stanley greeted reliever Rich Delucia with a solo HR.  Roberto Alomar doubled in the 7th to give the O's another one-run lead but was gunned down trying for third.  This time Boston didn't answer.  Baltimore blew the game open with a four-run 8th inning, starting with another RBI double from Surhoff; Kelly Stinnett singled in two more runs and Alomar added a sac fly. For blowing the save, Delucia was rewarded with a dubious W, while Randy Myers took the loss in relief of Clint Sadowski.

Game 2: BOA 8, BAA 3

Both teams found themselves gnashing their teeth in the first -- Biggio was caught stealing, while Boston failed to capitalize on a two-base Devon White error and two walks. The O's had better luck on the basepaths in the 3rd when Brady Anderson stole second, setting up Alomar for another RBI double.  In the bottom of the inning, after loading the bases for the second time in three innings, spot starter Pete Schourek was pulled in favor of Delucia, who got Mike Stanley to hit into an inning-ending double play.  However, Darren Lewis tied it in the 4th with a two-out single.  An Alomar homer in the 5th briefly put the O's back on top,but doubles by John Valentin and Troy O'Leary drove in three runs to give Boston a 4-2 lead.  Devon White cut the lead in half with a solo homer in the 7th.  In the 8th, with the Orioles running out of arms in the bullpen, a fatigued Alan Mills walked two batters, and Lenny Webster's error on a sac bunt attempt loaded the bases with nobody out.  Baltimore had to bring in closer Armando Benitez, who notched one strikeout before Nomar Garciaparra hit a decisive grand slam.

Game 3: BAA 5, BOA 1

In the 2nd, an error by Garciaparra and a hit batsman by Red Sox starter Tim Wakefield set up a two-run double by Anderson, and Alomar singled him home for a 3-0 Baltimore lead. Garciaparra partially atoned by taking Curt Schilling deep in the 4th, but Surhoff did the same to Wakefield in the 6th to make it 4-1.  Biggio tacked on another solo shot in the 8th.  Schilling was the big story -- he went the distance for his fifth win, allowing just six hits and no walks while striking out 13.
