Subject: Fw: Reds @ Padres
Sent: Wednesday, August 31, 2016 8:22 AM Subject: Reds @ Padres The schizophrenic and counterproductive Reds picked this week to overachieve after a few weeks of typical non-existent road luck.... Game 1: Pete Harnisch took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the 9th then made it 4-2 on a walk, wild pitch & double with the Padres down to their final out. Reliever Buddy Groom then faced one batter and made it 4-3 by allowing an RBI single to Darin Erstad. Comic reliever Scott Sullivan then faced one batter and Greg Vaughn singled Erstad to third. Then HAL got stupid and had Vaughn try to steal second; Brook Fordyce, who had homered earlier in the game, threw him out. Final score: 4-3 and Sullivan gets a save though he retired exactly 0 batters. Game 2: No sooner had the Reds come back with 2 runs in the 7th to tie the score at 3, than Hipolito Pichardo performed the "Perfect Sambito" and gophered one up to the first batter he faced in the bottom of the inning. But Trevor Hoffman wild pitched a run across for the Reds in the 8th and Cincy won it in the 10th on a double by Pat Watkins which plated Aaron Boone. Every reliever in the game for both teams choked as much as possible except for San Diego's Scott Radinsky (who faced 1 batter in the 10th after the run scored) and -- believe it or not -- Sullivan, who pitched 2 hitless and scoreless innings yet still was in constant jeopardy since he permitted 4 baserunners (2 walks and 2 errors, one of them his own) and got the win. Final score: 5-4 in 10. Game 3: Dennys Reyes and Albie Lopez combined on a 5-hit "shutout" (in terms of earned runs) in Cincy's 5-1 victory that completed the unlikely sweep. The San Diego run was keyed by a blown hit & run play in which the runner had only a 10% chance of stealing second. Of course he not only made it, but went to third on a throwing error by Fordyce then scored on a wild pitch. The Reds, one of the least talented teams in the league, now stand tied with the Pirates for first place (in the win column) and sports a phenomenal 13-4 record in one-run games in a season where the only thing all that "good" luck will accomplish is a deterioration of our deserved 1998 draft position.
