Subject: BAA @ CHA Week 9 (plus new CM)

Now flirting with .500 despite the season's disastrous start, the streaking Orioles won two of three seesaw battles in Chicago.

Game 1: CHA 5, BAA 2

With two on and no outs in the 2nd, the Orioles manager considered having Lenny Webster bunt, but decided not to when he realized that the next batter was light-hitting backup shortstop Kevin Elster.  Webster promptly hit into a double play, just before Elster came through with a single for only his second RBI of the season.  The O's went ahead 2-0 in the top of the 6th when Rafael Palmeiro doubled and Matt Williams singled him home. But Chicago struck back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double by Henry Rodriguez and a three-run homer by Wil Cordero.  Baltimore had plenty of opportunities, leaving nine on base, but couldn't push any more runs across.  Kevin Stocker went deep in the 8th to give the Sox an insurance run.

Game 2: BAA 5, CHA 4

After Devon White homered to give Baltimore a 1-0 lead in the 3rd, it looked like Chicago would get it right back, but BJ Surhoff threw Mike Blowers out at the plate to end the inning.  The teams traded two-run homers in the 4th (by Surhoff and Rodriguez, respectively.)  Mike Caruso's RBI single in the 6th tied the game, but newly acquired Trey Beamon hit a two-run double in the 7th to put the Orioles back on top, 5-3.  Closer Armando Benitez came on in the 9th and loaded the bases; one run scored on a fielder's choice, but Surhoff's great catch robbed Albert Belle of what looked like a walkoff hit, giving Benitez a dubious save.

Game 3: BAA 6, CHA 3

Rodriguez took Charles Nagy deep to give the White Sox a run in the 2nd.  In the 3rd, Jeffrey Hammonds singled to tie the game and Mike Sirotka threw a wild pitch to give Baltimore a 2-1 lead. However, Nagy served up another gopher ball, this time to Albert Belle, to tie the game in the 4th. The tie held until White put the O's ahead in the 8th with a pinch-hit solo homer.  In the 9th, Craig Biggio came through with a two-run homer and Cal Ripken added a sac fly for a four-run lead. So in the bottom of the inning, when Frank Thomas homered off Benitez, who'd entered the game in the 8th, the word "blown" did not precede "save."
