The two least-talented teams in the N.L. -- one pointlessly overachieving and the other underachieving on all cylinders -- squared off in Miami and the result was what you'd expect.... Game 1: HAL went back to his usual series-opening demoralization of the Reds, as FLN's Mike Hampton allowed just 2 hits in 7 IP and was supported by a robust 6 for 15 with RISP performance by the Marlin batters in their 8-5 win. Cincy smacked 3 homers in the contest including one by Mike Cameron in his first at bat in a Reds' uniform, thereby matching the home team in total bases, drawing more walks, and getting one (non-costly) error while making none. But the clutch hits went one way only and that's what decided the outcome. Game 2: The Reds got two Si 1 lo 2-20's in the top of the first and made outs both times, as most teams would -- unless that team is playing against the Reds. Florida got that exact chance at a hit in the bottom of the first, and naturally drew the 1. Which was naturally quite costly when a two-out gopher naturally followed. Though permitting only 3 hits in 6 IP, Livan Hernandez was unable to hold the 3-0 lead and he eventually took a 7-3 loss. Brett Tomko recovered from the surgical split card screw-job and held the M's scoreless after the third, and closer Scott Sullivan temporarily dropped his ERA back into single digits (9.19) with 3 scoreless relief innings for his 5th save. Game 3: Dennys Reyes raised his record to 3-0 and lowered his ERA to 2.08 in Cincy's 3-1 win over Jim Abbott, who fared far better against the Reds than he had in his initial start of 1998 (16 baserunners and 12 runs in 3 IP vs. the Giants). Bret Boone's 2-run homer in the second inning was the difference, and completed the CIN scoring for the day. After the series opener, the Fish took a page from the Reds' playbook and got 0 hits with RISP for the remainder of the series. Alan |
