Subject: BAA @ MNA Week 10

(No new CM this week.)

The Orioles were still flirting with .500 before it slapped them in the face, as the last-place Twins swept a three-game series at the Metrodome.

Game 1: MNA 5, BAA 4

A two-run 1st inning double by BJ Surhoff got the O's off to a great start, but in the bottom of the inning Baltimore' Armando Reynoso walked in a run to make it 2-1.  Roberto Alomar's solo homer in the 2nd was cancelled out in the bottom of the 3rd, when Minnesota's Miguel Cairo tripled and scored on a groundout. The O's got a two-run lead (again) in the 6th, when Surhoff scored from first on a Matt Williams double, but they failed to score after loading the bases in both the 7th and 8th. Matt Lawton's RBI single in the bottom of the 8th brought the Twins within a run.  In the the bottom of the 9th, with two out and Twins on second and third, Baltimore closer Armando Benitez intentionally walked Pat Meares to face light-hitting Jose Valentin.  The next two walks by Benitez, definitely not intentional, brought in the tying and winning runs.

Game 2: MNA 14, BAA 7

RBI singles by David Ortiz and Meares, plus a throwing error by Bobby Bonilla, gave the Twins a 3-0 lead in the 1st.  Cairo added an RBI single in the 2nd.  In the 3rd, Alomar doubled home Kevin Elster and scored on a Rafael Palmeiro single to cut the lead in half, but Minnesota countered with RBI doubles from Mark Sweeney and Craig Shipley to bump it back up to 6-2. The Twins added two more in the 4th when Matt Lawton singled in a run, stole second, advanced on a passed ball, and scored on a groundout.  In the 5th, another Alomar homer and an RBI single by Palmeiro again cut the lead in half.  Alomar struck again in the top of the 6th with a two-run homer, cutting the Twins lead to 8-6.  In the bottom of the inning, after another questionable intentional walk, reliever Mark Guthrie gave up a sac fly -- oh, wait, Bonilla dropped the ball and two runs scored.  In the 7th, for the Orioles, it was again one step up and two steps back -- make that four steps, as Williams' RBI double was offset by a Lance Johnson sac fly and Ortiz added a three-run double to make it a seven-run lead -- something the Orioles couldn't cut in half if they tried.

Side note #1: In the 8th, after he'd hit those two homers, Alomar was hit by a pitch.  I wonder if Strat-o-Matic umpires issued a warning to both benches.

Side note #2: Besides the two costly errors, Bonilla went 0-for-3 including a rally-killing double play.  Our only solace is that the Mets paid most of that cost. :-)

Game 3: MNA 4, BAA 2

Brady Anderson led off the game with a double and advanced on two groundouts for a 1-0 Orioles lead that held until the 5th, when Cairo took Curt Schilling deep for a three-run bomb.  Lawton hit a solo shot for the Twins in the 6th to make it 4-1.  After that, a pinch-hit HR by Bonilla in the 7th was all the scoring the Orioles could muster.  Mike Morgan pitched well to earn the win for the Twins.  Baltimore finished the series 5-for-27 with runners in scoring position.
